Students, parents, staff, alumni of the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Friends of the Academy.

Good morning and welcome to this day of commemoration, celebration and hope.

Aga Khan University marks a milestone as over 700 students graduate across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Pakistan. With women comprising 70% of the graduating class, the ceremonies emphasized education, empowerment, and community service.

Mombasa, Kenya, 18 February 2024 – Completed renovation of the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa marks a milestone in its ongoing commitment to provide quality health care to a population of nearly 1.2 million people. The refurbishment has transformed the 86-bed facility into a state-of-the-art 115-bed secondary hospital, offering comprehensive, integrated health services to the communities it serves.

The renovation project represents a total investment of $12.2 million, with significant support from Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

The First Lady Rachel Ruto met Princess Zahra Aga Khan, daughter of His Highness the Aga Khan. The meeting aimed at exploring opportunities for collaboration and mutual support in advancing various initiatives across Kenya.

The First Lady and Princess Zahra Aga Khan delved into a wide range of topics, including the advancement of women’s economic empowerment, healthcare, and education.

Nairobi, Kenya, 16 February 2024 – Princess Zahra Aga Khan met today with the First Lady of Kenya, Her Excellency Rachel Ruto, at the Serena Hotel Nairobi, and later called on the President of the Republic, His Excellency William Samoei Ruto, at State House in Nairobi.

The meetings provided an opportunity to discuss the decades-long development partnership between the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the Government of Kenya to improve the quality of life of all Kenyans, and areas of future cooperation.

Princess Zahra is on a six-day visit to Kenya to attend the global convocation ceremony of the Aga Khan University, and to visit a number of AKDN projects. The current longest-serving member of AKU’s Board of Trustees, she will speak at the ceremony on behalf of AKU’s Chancellor, Mawlana Hazar Imam, and its Board. More than 730 students across four countries will graduate this year.

The Aga Khan Health Services Tanzania unveiled its first-ever state-of-the-art emergency training center in Dar es Salaam, aiming to improve emergency care education and service provision nationwide. The initiative, funded by the Polish government, empowers healthcare professionals and facilities with advanced resources and training, setting new standards in emergency care.

President William Ruto on Friday hosted Princess Zahra Aga Khan at the State House, Nairobi.

Ruto said Kenya looks forward to more collaboration in other sectors to enhance public-private partnerships in the development agenda.

The President added that Kenya appreciates the Aga Khan Development Network's significant contribution to health, education, financial services and energy.

The AKDN agencies and Kenya have closely collaborated in the fields of industry, tourism, financial services, clean energy, media, health, education, community development, and infrastructure.

A necessary condition for pluralism to succeed is that the general education of the populations involved must be sufficiently complete so that individual groups, defined by ethnicity, religion, language and the like, understand the potential consequences of actions that might impinge on others. This is, for example, one of the principal reasons why today there is so much uninformed speculation about conflict between the Muslim world and others.

Sited near the low-lying Buffalo Bayou in Houston and featuring complex landscaping and extensive concrete work, the first Ismaili Center in the U.S. has required an intense ;commitment to precision from its owner and design and construction team. Building the LEED Gold-targeted campus for the branch of Shia Islam began in 2021 and is set to finish in 2025.
