I am deeply concerned by the recent renewal of unrest in Gorno-Badakshan.

My guidance to my Jamat is to live within the laws of the land. Do not engage in violence. It is of utmost importance that my spiritual children always uphold our Jamat’s tradition to live in peace and harmony alongside all their fellow citizens.

DUSHANBE — The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the joint Thrive Tajikistan: Partnership for Socio-Economic Development program, officially opened a new drinking water supply system and school latrine in Farkhor district of Khatlon province. The drinking water system will provide clean, reliable water to almost 450 households (over 3,000 people), and the new school latrine will provide access to improved sanitation to more than 600 schoolchildren and teachers, the U.S. Embassy in Tajikistan reported.

Today's gathering is a remarkable event. It brings together people from the many parts of Tajikistan, a country that, though small, has a rich and challenging diversity. It brings together representatives of a variety of neighboring and distant countries that wish well to the people of Tajikistan. It brings together religious and secular leaders deeply concerned with the future of Tajikistan’s people.

On Thursday November 7, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met in Pars with His Highness the Aga Khan, Imam (Spiritual Leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

In the course of the talks, they discussed issues related to state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the Aga Khan Development Network, according t the Tajik president’s official website.

Tajik leader reportedly expressed satisfaction with the level and content of real cooperation between Tajikistan and AKDN.

Eastern Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region—comprising more than half of the historical mountainous region of Badakhshan, which it shares with northern Afghanistan—is one of the most isolated, impoverished and unsettled places in Central Asia. Gorno-Badakhshan was a center of resistance to Dushanbe during the civil war in the 1990s, and the central government has since worked hard to try to bring it to heel, alternating threats of a military crackdown with expanded economic assistance (see EDM, October 18, 2018; Ozodandishon, October 23, 2018).

Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan, youngest son of His Highness the Aga Khan, arrived yesterday in Khorog, the capital of Tajikistan’s Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) for an official visit, according to the GBAO administration press center.

On the same day, Prince Aly Muhammad visited the Khorog Campus of the University of Central Asia (UCA).

Within the framework of implementation of a protocol for expansion of cross-border cooperation for disaster preparedness and response to emergency situations between Tajikistan and Afghanistan signed in February 2018, the first training for Tajik and Afghan female rescuers has begun in Dushanbe, according to the Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of Tajikistan, reports Trend citing to News.tj

Today's ceremony represents a milestone in the history of the Ismaili Muslim community's presence in Central Asia, a presence which dates back to the second century of Islam. For me personally, as the 49th hereditary Imam of the Ismailis, this is a day of great happiness.

It is also fitting that the Foundation Ceremony of a landmark cultural and religious centre should coincide with the celebration of the one thousandth anniversary of the birth of Syedna Nasir-i-Khusraw.
