Two of the finest higher educational institutions of Pakistan, the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi and the Aga Khan University (AKU) are coming together to take the quality of higher education to the next level.

In a meeting held at the IBA Karachi, Main Campus, the heads of both institutes, Dr S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA Karachi, and Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin, President AKU, discussed various avenues where their respective organizations can play major roles to create positive societal impact through their collaborative efforts.

The Swiss Ambassador to Pakistan and Afghanistan Bénédict de Cerjat visited the academic and health care facilities at the Aga Khan University in Karachi.

During the conversations with AKU President Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin and other University leaders, he talked about Switzerland’s strong bilateral relationships with Pakistan.

“I am pleased to learn that the Aga Khan University’s programmes and facilities are accredited by prestigious international bodies like Advance HE, Joint Commission International, and the College of American Pathologists,” said Ambassador Cerjat.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 16 – The Aga Khan hospitals in East Africa have received a Sh290 million grant from Proparco, the private sector financing arm of AFD Group, the French Development Agency to increase access to health care services by boosting oxygen supply and supporting needy patients with quality care.

The grant will benefit the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi and the Aga Khan Hospitals in Mombasa, Kisumu and Dar-es-Salaam including ninety-four outreach and medical centres of the Aga Khan Health Services in Kenya and Tanzania.

The Aga Khan University’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 is commendable and other institutions should follow suit, said Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmad Shaikh while talking to AKU President Sulaiman Shahabuddin at the minister’s office.

Mr Sulaiman informed the minister that new solar installations on AKU campuses will cut the University’s carbon footprint by more than 365,000 kg per year, the equivalent to 1.5 million kilometres travelled in a medium-sized car.

The University of Michigan and Aga Khan University have agreed to deepen their collaboration across a range of academic and scientific initiatives to transform data science for global health.

Joseph Kolars, director of the U-M Center for Global Health Equity, and AKU Provost and Vice President Carl Amrhein signed an agreement between the two institutes during a virtual ceremony on June 18. U-M President Mark Schlissel and AKU President Firoz Rasul also attended the signing ceremony.

The largest-ever survey of routine immunisation coverage across Pakistan has found that 76.1 per cent of children under the age of 2 years have received the full course of vaccinations recommended by Pakistan’s government.

Of the remaining children, more than 1 in every 6, or 17.7 per cent, have been partially vaccinated while 5.9 per cent of under 2s have never been vaccinated, according to results from The Third-Party Verification Immunization Coverage Survey, TPVICS.

KARACHI: Efforts to find less-invasive and more affordable cure for two common genetic disorders — beta thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia — have received a boost with Aga Khan University’s research centre recently winning a competitive research grant of Rs159.60 million.

Currently, Pakistan has an estimated 100,000 transfusion-dependent thalassaemia patients with 5,000 babies born with the disease every year.

On the other hand, sickle-cell disease is one of the well-known causes of anaemia in the country.
