1954, January 31: Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah visited Basra before the Platinum Jubilee. Wazir Ahmed Nizari and about 50 Ismailis went from Kuwait to Basra where they got an opportunity to present their individual Mehmani.

Through his intimate knowledge of diverse cultural traditions, he played a unique and significant role in the international affairs of his time, and his long public career had many dimensions.
A social reformer, whose concerns included the alleviation of rural poverty and the upliftment of women in society, he was an advocate of modern education and became an ardent supporter of male and female educational advancement in the subcontinent.

Inspired by the architecture of the Cairo Fatimids, the structure is recognizable by its elegance and by its special use of pink granite. It was built at the request of the begum, wife of the Aga Khan III who died in 1957.The begum Aga Khan; who died in 2000, lived in the white villa below but closed the mausoleum to the public in 1997 to allow the deceased to rest in peace away from the bustle of the living.

Ismaili Volunteer Corps
The Ismaili Volunteers Corp began in 1919. It was comprised of a few khaki-clad social workers known as His Highness The Aga Khan's Bombay Volunteers Corps. In 1920, Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah, pleased with the work performed by the Bombay Volunteers Corp, granted them the "Coat of Arms" to be worn as part of their uniform. This officially established the Volunteer Corps as an organized body. Mowlana Sultan Muhammad Shah wore it's uniform for the first time in 1921 in His capacity as Colonel of the Corps.
