Nairobi, Kenya, 16 February 2024 – Princess Zahra Aga Khan met today with the First Lady of Kenya, Her Excellency Rachel Ruto, at the Serena Hotel Nairobi, and later called on the President of the Republic, His Excellency William Samoei Ruto, at State House in Nairobi.

The meetings provided an opportunity to discuss the decades-long development partnership between the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the Government of Kenya to improve the quality of life of all Kenyans, and areas of future cooperation.

Princess Zahra is on a six-day visit to Kenya to attend the global convocation ceremony of the Aga Khan University, and to visit a number of AKDN projects. The current longest-serving member of AKU’s Board of Trustees, she will speak at the ceremony on behalf of AKU’s Chancellor, Mawlana Hazar Imam, and its Board. More than 730 students across four countries will graduate this year.

President William Ruto on Friday hosted Princess Zahra Aga Khan at the State House, Nairobi.

Ruto said Kenya looks forward to more collaboration in other sectors to enhance public-private partnerships in the development agenda.

The President added that Kenya appreciates the Aga Khan Development Network's significant contribution to health, education, financial services and energy.

The AKDN agencies and Kenya have closely collaborated in the fields of industry, tourism, financial services, clean energy, media, health, education, community development, and infrastructure.

The Aga Khan Development Network’s Eastern Africa Regional COVID-19 Response Programme, funded with 9.4 million euros, is set to conclude this month, leaving a significant impact on over 10 million individuals across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Mozambique.

Launched in December 2020, the initiative aimed to address the health, economic, and social vulnerabilities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in Eastern Africa. The program, jointly funded by the European Union (EU) and the Aga Khan Foundation, followed a three-pronged approach to improve systemic, gender-sensitive responses.

The Aga Khan University (AKU) has launched its 40th Anniversary celebrations today, as it celebrates the graduation of the Class of 2022.

Close to two decades after its launch in Pakistan, AKU began a new chapter in East Africa with precursor programmes in nursing and teacher education. Today, the University in Kenya has grown its offering to postgraduate programmes in medicine, media and communications studies and hosts three research institutes.

The 40-year celebrations will be year-long with various activities including a research symposium, public lectures and student showcases.

Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) has announced a commitment to grow its lending to green projects to a quarter of its loan book by 2030. The Bank has also committed to achieve net zero carbon emissions status across its group operations by the same time.

DTB will also grow 10 million trees by 2030 through its #MuchMoreThanTrees initiative, as part of its efforts to help mitigate climate change.

The Bank announced the commitments during its inaugural economic and sustainability forum held at the Crowne Plaza in Nairobi and themed Embedding Sustainability in Businesses.

I would like to congratulate the Nation Media Group on holding this fourth edition of the global award-winning Kusi Ideas Festival.

Since it was founded by His Highness the Aga Khan in 1959, during the struggle for independence and Pan-Africanism, the Group’s path has been closely entwined with the history of Kenya, of East Africa and of the African continent.
