Deforestation is one of the great challenges of our times. Scientists estimate about half of all the forests that once covered the Earth are gone. The United Nations Environment Programme tells us that 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed around the globe every year. City Park face lift: Aga Khan, govt. sign agreement

The government and the Aga Khan Trust have formalized the project to restore the Nairobi City Park. His Highness The Aga Khan and Prime Minister Raila Odinga signed the agreement to rehabilitate the Park at the Nairobi National Museum paving the way for the Aga Khan Trust to embark on the rehabilitation early next year.

HIS Highness the Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims, has received Kenya’s highest medal of honour.

President Mwai Kibaki awarded him “The Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya” during a ceremony at a State banquet in the Aga Khan’s honour, according to a statement.

Kibaki commended him saying he had recorded an impressive and enduring legacy of service both to his religious group and to other people.

The Aga Khan Foundation today marked the 25th anniversary of the Madrasa Early Childhood Development Programme in the presence of His Highness the Aga Khan, founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and Chief Guest Kenya’s Minister for Science and Technology, Hon. Dr. Noah Wekesa.

Let me say first what a wonderful honour it is - to become a Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya, and to do so on one’s Golden Jubilee!

I am most deeply grateful to President Kibaki for this award - and for his very warm and generous words.

It is a pleasure for me to be here tonight, among so many old and new friends.
