McGill University, Montreal, Canada, confers Doctorate on Mowlana Hazar Imam. David Johnston, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, said in his presentation 'This man is a bridge between North and South, East and West. His leadership is beyond politics, beyond race, beyond religion. President Ronald Reagan of the USA and his wife Nancy Reagan took over the Aga Khan's 18th century Maison de Saussure in a village near Geneva as a base for the summit with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Bishkek, October 31. (KABAR). The meeting of Kyrgyz President Askar Akaev with Prince Aga Khan was held in the Government House. In the course of the meeting, an Agreement on Economic Development between the Kyrgyz Republic and Aga Khan Fund is signed by Finance Minister of Kyrgyzstan Bolot Abildaev and Director of the Aga Khan Fund Yen Chein. In words of A. Akaev, this agreement is a fundamental for further cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Aga Khan Fund.

Mowlana Hazar Imam was honoured by Italy's President Francesco Cossiga when he was presented with the country's highest honour, the Cavaliere del Lavoro at a ceremony in Rome. The Order of the Cavaliere del Lavoro is presented to those who have made a major contribution to the country's economy. Hazar Imam is the first Muslim to receive such an award.

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture organised in Zanzibar the eleventh international seminar on the 'Architecture of Housing' and a number of new approaches were defined for the chronic shortage of housing that result as rapid demographic growth occurs. Hazar Imam said; 'The lack and deterioration of human habitation as economies grow, urbanisation accelerates and demographics explode, pose some of the greatest practical and ethical problems that developing countries face.'

Kabul (IRIN) : Work has begun to rehabilitate and preserve one of Afghanistan's most historical sites to its original splendour. The tomb of the 16th century Mogul emperor, Babur, and the grounds surrounding it in the Afghan capital Kabul, are to be restored to their former glory by Afghans themselves, with help from the Aga Khan Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Recovery and Employment Afghanistan Programme (REAP), funded by the Japanese government.

1998, October 2nd: The grandest party of the year was held at Aiglemont, Mowlana Shah Karim's residence and stud farm at Chantilly, outside Paris, on the occasion of Mowlana Hazar Imam's wedding with Begum Inaara. Some of Europe's most important personnalities attended, including President Giscard d'Estaing of France, and 34 royalties such as Bulgarian King Simeon, Prince William Alexander of Hollande, Imperatrice Farah Pahlavi, Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and 23 ambassadors for a total of around 700 guests.
