I am delighted to be able today to perform the official opening of the Quetta Serena Hotel, which actually started doing business-albeit on a limited basis- some months ago in July 1988.

Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan, is a city with a rich and colourful history, a city which has enjoyed steady growth over these past years.

It is an honour for me to have been invited here today to participate in the inauguration of this important international seminar and I have welcomed the opportunity because the issue of improving the living conditions of the poor has long been of the deepest concern to me, just as it was to my grandfather, Sir Sultan Mohammed Shah Aga Khan.

Your Excellency, Mr. Ahmedali Merchant, Members of the Education and Housing Boards, Ladies and Gentlemen.
It gives Me the greatest pleasure to be here in Sherqilla for a ceremony which is a milestone in the progress of the Diamond Jubilee Schools both in the Northern Areas and in Pakistan as a whole. I was deeply sorry that the uncertainty of the weather prevented Me from coming here in March. However, the disappointment helps to make today much more memorable.

The Aga Khan School, Sherqilla, is a project of which everyone in the Jamat and in the village can be proud.

The Karachi Jamat was blessed with the gracious presence of Sarkar Mowlana Hazar Imam Shah Karim al-Husayni from 13th February 1981 when he arrived at about 11:30 in the night, to Tuesday 17th February, when he left around 10 in the morning. The three day visit was packed with activity, the highlight of which was the official inauguration of the School of Nursing at the Aga Khan Hospital and Medical College Complex by President of Pakistan, General Mohammad Zia ul-Haq.

FIRST VISIT TO FOLLOWERS IN KARACHI - 1957-08-01

Shortly after assuming the reins of Imamat His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan started on a whirlwind tour of Ismailis. Before his auspicious arrival at Karachi, the birth place of his grandfather, in August 1957, Imam-e-Zamam visited Ismaili centres at London and Paris. These visits were marked by memorable scenes of devotion to the spiritual father.

Mr President, your unfaltering encouragement has enabled us to bring the Aga Khan University into being. To give the first private University in Pakistan your support was a bold initiative and one to which I wish to offer the fullest recognition.
