I am delighted to be able today to perform the official opening of the Quetta Serena Hotel, which actually started doing business-albeit on a limited basis- some months ago in July 1988.

Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan, is a city with a rich and colourful history, a city which has enjoyed steady growth over these past years.

It is an honour for me to have been invited here today to participate in the inauguration of this important international seminar and I have welcomed the opportunity because the issue of improving the living conditions of the poor has long been of the deepest concern to me, just as it was to my grandfather, Sir Sultan Mohammed Shah Aga Khan.

Your Excellency, Mr. Ahmedali Merchant, Members of the Education and Housing Boards, Ladies and Gentlemen.
It gives Me the greatest pleasure to be here in Sherqilla for a ceremony which is a milestone in the progress of the Diamond Jubilee Schools both in the Northern Areas and in Pakistan as a whole. I was deeply sorry that the uncertainty of the weather prevented Me from coming here in March. However, the disappointment helps to make today much more memorable.

The Aga Khan School, Sherqilla, is a project of which everyone in the Jamat and in the village can be proud.

You have paid My family a great honour by inviting Me here today to receive an Honourary Doctorate of Laws from this famous centre of learning. I am most grateful to you all, and as a Muslim, it makes Me especially happy that this ceremony should be taking place at a university whose development has been so intimately linked with the historic province of Sind.

Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It gives me great happiness this afternoon to be present at this ceremony which honours one of Pakistan's leading citizens who, for myself and my family, has also been a very dear friend.

Your Excellencies, Mr. Ahmedali Merchant, Members of the Education Board, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.
I am delighted to be here today at last, after the disappointment of having to cancel My visit in March because of the weather, and to be joined on this important Silver Jubilee occasion both by distinguished guests and by so many members of the Jamat. It is heart-warming for Me to see you all here.

May I say how glad I am to be back in Dacca for the purpose of publicly celebrating my installation as forty-ninth Imam of the Shia Imami Ismailis.

To you all I extend a warm and sincere welcome to the inaugural session of this conference on 'The Role of Hospitals in Primary Health Care'.

What can a more efficient and more advanced telephone system do for Pakistan's future? In a country where 110 million people were served by only 700,000 telephone lines, (according to 1989 statistics) how can modern information technology bridge the gaps in communication, understanding, knowledge, resources and opportunities between people?

The Karachi Jamat was blessed with the gracious presence of Sarkar Mowlana Hazar Imam Shah Karim al-Husayni from 13th February 1981 when he arrived at about 11:30 in the night, to Tuesday 17th February, when he left around 10 in the morning. The three day visit was packed with activity, the highlight of which was the official inauguration of the School of Nursing at the Aga Khan Hospital and Medical College Complex by President of Pakistan, General Mohammad Zia ul-Haq.

This speech was delivered at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hyderabad by H.R.H. The Agakhan in December, 1964.

I am grateful and honoured by your kind invitation to me to-night, and I am sincerely thankful to you for having given me this occasion to meet the industrial and business elite of this historical and beautiful city.

Shortly after assuming the reins of Imamat His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan started on a whirlwind tour of Ismailis. Before his auspicious arrival at Karachi, the birth place of his grandfather, in August 1957, Imam-e-Zamam visited Ismaili centres at London and Paris. These visits were marked by memorable scenes of devotion to the spiritual father.

SLAMABAD, Feb 18: Prince Karim Aga Khan has warmly congratulated Mohammad Nawaz Sharif on the landslide victory achieved by his part in the Feb 3 elections and on assuming the office of Prime Minister.
In a message addressed to the prime minister, Prince Karim Aga Khan said,

Speaking at the first Convocation of the Aga Khan University on 20th March 1989, President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, referred to the Aga Khan University Medical Centre as a most impressive story of growth and expansion.'

Mr President, your unfaltering encouragement has enabled us to bring the Aga Khan University into being. To give the first private University in Pakistan your support was a bold initiative and one to which I wish to offer the fullest recognition.
