Kenya’s first president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, once tried to get one of his relatives to control the Nation Media Group.

In a 2010 book titled The Birth of a Nation: The Story of a Newspaper in Kenya, Gerard Loughran, a former senior editor at the Daily Nation, narrates what transpired after Kenyatta made a proposition for one of his kinsmen to lead the firm.

After the Aga Khan opened Serena Hotel in a ceremony attended by Kenya’s founding father on February 16, 1976, Mzee introduced the businessman to his chosen candidate.

The large number of young people in the Northeast need opportunities to be self-reliant instead of looking for scarce white collar jobs, the Aga Khan Foundation has said.

To achieve this, the government should work together with the private sector and the civil society, the foundation’s manager for Coast and North Eastern Atrash Ali said.

The organisation intends to train 13,000 youths in Garissa, Mandera and Lamu.

Ali distributed training and business equipment to 13 youth groups on Saturday. He said up to 75 per cent of the population in the region are below 35 years.

While he commended the continent's resilience, economic progress and a widening acceptance of diversity, it was this one sentence that summed up his optimism about the continent.
