June 9, 2009 - Edmonton--The University of Alberta and the Aga Khan University today signed a memorandum of understanding that advances their respective goals to increase global engagement and to promote equitable human advancement and social justice throughout the world.

The Aga Khan University signed a memorandum of understanding that strengthens ties with the University of Alberta. Cooperation between both institutions promises to bring great advances to world knowledge in diverse areas of study from health sciences to culture to resource conservation to business. The Aga Khan also received an honorary doctor of laws degree from the U of A

EDMONTON — The Aga Khan signed a memorandum of understanding Tuesday during a visit to Edmonton that will strengthen ties with the University of Alberta.

The spiritual leader of the Shia Ismali Muslims was in town to deliver the convocation, as well as receive an honorary doctor of laws.

Tuesday's memorandum of understanding builds on a collaboraton between the U of A and the Aga Khan University first signed almost exactly three years ago.

The Aga Khan receives an honorary degree from University of Alberta Chancellor Linda Hughes on June 9.

leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and Founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan
Development Network (AKDN), will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree
from the University of Alberta on June 9th in recognition of his efforts to
improve the lives of millions of the world's poorest people and build a global
culture of tolerance.

His Highness the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and Founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta on June 9th in recognition of his efforts to improve the lives of millions of the world's poorest people and build a global
culture of tolerance.

H.H. The Aga Khan is in Edmonton, Canada for a 3 day visit, accompanied by His son, Prince Hussain. During his visit, the Aga Khan met with Premier Ed Stelmach and University of Alberta President, Dr. Indira Samarasekera. He also witnessed the signing of an agreement to enhance collaboration with the University of Alberta.

His Highness the Aga Khan and Prince Hussain Aga Khan are greeted by the Honorable Dave Hancock, Alberta Minister of Education, and by Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel, upon their arrival at Edmonton International Airport on Sunday, June 7.

According to the Globe & Mail, 'The real challenge for us all is to find ways to broaden and strengthen voluntary effort into the next century,' Princess Zahra Aga Khan told the 15th biennial meeting of the International Association for Volunteer Effort in her speech.
