Nairobi, Kenya, 16 February 2024 – Princess Zahra Aga Khan met today with the First Lady of Kenya, Her Excellency Rachel Ruto, at the Serena Hotel Nairobi, and later called on the President of the Republic, His Excellency William Samoei Ruto, at State House in Nairobi.

The meetings provided an opportunity to discuss the decades-long development partnership between the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the Government of Kenya to improve the quality of life of all Kenyans, and areas of future cooperation.

Princess Zahra is on a six-day visit to Kenya to attend the global convocation ceremony of the Aga Khan University, and to visit a number of AKDN projects. The current longest-serving member of AKU’s Board of Trustees, she will speak at the ceremony on behalf of AKU’s Chancellor, Mawlana Hazar Imam, and its Board. More than 730 students across four countries will graduate this year.

In his capacity as Chancellor of the Aga Khan University, His Highness The Aga Khan addressed the University’s first ever global convocation on 22 May 2021. The special virtual ceremony brought together AKU’s graduating classes in Kenya, Pakistan, Tanzania, Uganda, and the UK, for a unique celebration of knowledge and learning.

KARACHI: More than 600 students in Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda graduated from the Aga Khan University (AKU) in a live-streamed global convocation ceremony that was watched by viewers around the world.

During the live session, the varsity commits to becoming carbon neutral in its operations by 2030. It will be among the first institutions in Pakistan and East Africa to achieve carbon neutrality.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has commended Aga Khan University (AKU) for its leadership in transforming public health and improving lives of women and girls globally.

Speaking as the chief guest as the university graduated 667 students from three continents on Saturday, Melinda French Gates, a co-chair and trustee of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, described the university not only as a global resource, but also as a transformative force in public and women’s health, advancing economic development and creating opportunities for women and girls.
