Paris's flag-bedecked international exposition centre, Porte de Versailles, was the venue of Mowlana Hazar Imam and Begum Salimah's first visit to the European Jamat on Thursday, July 3rd, 1980. Ismailis from France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Germany; Switzerland, Italy and Spain, converged on Paris for this long-awaited Mulakat after weeks of preparation.

Thank you for being part of the courageous group of men and women who have agreed to face a great challenge, one that I have experienced for the last twenty five years, and which leaves me in the same state of perplexity as it did two decades ago when I succeeded to the Ismaili Imamat.

For an Ismaili murid of the Imam, the happiness and joy in beholding the face of Imam-e-Zaman is something which can only be felt and not described. For hundreds of years, Jamats in every part of the world wait eagerly for this moment and in situations where the opportunity for this Zaheri Didar is not possible, representatives of the Jamats, as they have done on the past, travel thousands of miles to see the Imam and express to him the immense love and gratitude of the Jamats.

For the editors of the Ismaili magazines, the occasion was unique. A seminar, held at Aiglemont from 11th to 13th June, had been organised by the Information Department to discuss ways and means to pursue future development and collaboration, with a view to giving the jamats better and more informative publications in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Western Europe, Portugal, India, Pakistan and Africa.

It is a great pleasure for me to have the opportunity to address this inaugural session of the World Mountain Forum.
I am especially happy that the Ismaili Imamat has been given the opportunity to participate in a Forum organised by and for all those concerned with the difficulties facing the populations of mountain regions, and to share lessons that have been learnt, to exchange mutual experience and advice, to better identify the problems that exist, and to try, as part of a joint effort, to propose new and more efficient solutions.

Creating a credible democracy in Iraq will be a long and difficult process, according to the Aga Khan, billionaire spiritual leader of the world's 15 million Ismaili Muslims, in an interview to appear on Tuesday.'Democracy has not been applied in Iraq for a very long time,' he said in Tuesday's edition of the French Roman Catholic newspaper La Croix.
'Putting in place a credible system will take time and will be difficult. Afghanistan proves that,' said Prince Karim Aga Khan, leader of the Ismaili group of Islam's Shi'ite branch.

Dalakhani maintained his unbeaten record in most impressive style as he galloped away with the Prix du Jockey-Club at Chantilly.
The handsome grey colt was always seemingly coasting in the French Derby and pulled clear of his rivals in the final two furlongs, with jockey Christophe Soumillon barely having to shake his reins to get the desired result.
Even Super Celebre, the only real challenger to emerge from out of the pack in the home straight in pursuit of the winner, was flattered to get within two lengths at the line.

The Aga Khan is to donate ?40m (

Alcatel < ALCATEL A > a annoncé lundi avoir remporté un contrat 'de plusieurs millions d'euros' portant sur la fourniture d'un réseau GSM en Afghanistan.
Ce contrat a été signé avec le consortium international TDCA (Telecom Development Company Afghanistan) - placé sous la direction de l'Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) et Monaco Telecom International - qui a acquis en janvier dernier la nouvelle licence GSM afghane.

Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, son of the late Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan and the late Princess Andrée Aga Khan, died in Boston yesterday, aged 70 after a short illness. Coincidentally, his half-brother, the late Prince Aly Khan died on exactly the same day forty-three ago. The younger of Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah's two sons, Prince Sadruddin was the uncle of the present and 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Ismaili Muslims, His Highness the Aga Khan.

The Aga Khan and his German-born wife announced the birth on Tuesday in Paris of a son, Prince Aly Muhammad.The prince and his 36-year-old mother, Begum Inaara Aga Khan, were doing well, according to the Aga Khan's press office. There was no immediate word on the weight of the child. The 63-year-old Khan is the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslim community, which has a following of 12-15 million people worldwide.
