His grandfather named him to the Imamate in 1957--when Karim was an undergraduate at Harvard University--passing over Karim's father, Prince Aly Khan, and also Aly's brother, Prince Sadruddin. Karim is among the world's wealthiest men, with business investments strewn around the globe but particularly in Africa, Europe and Asia. Excerpts from an rare interview :

But then who isn't when you reach the revered age of eighty. So I am there, but I feel I as though I am 40. Thanks to you. .
This has been a very, very happy occasion for Me and I would like to thank everyone who has participated in making this event happen.

In 1957, the Aga Khan succeeded his grandfather as the leader of the Ismailis. He is the 49th Imam of a community estimated at between 12 and 15 million believers living in 25 countries. Prince Karim Al-Husseini (his birth name) created the Aga Khan Development network (AKDN), committed to development in the world, regardless of whether there is a community in the country in question. Grand Croix of the Legion of Honour, this discreet man, aged 82 years old, welcomed us for one of his rare French interviews in his property in Gouvieux, Oise.

On 16th December, the LIF invited Mowlana Hazar Imam to a birthday party in Aiglemont. members of the Noorani family also attended: Prince Amyn, Prince Rahim, Princess Salwa, Prince Irfan, Princess Zahra.and Prince Hussain were in attendance.
A short video of the Concert and the Imam cutting the cake, was shown to the world Jamat .

Mr. Campbell is a former premier of British Columbia and Canada’s current High Commissioner in London.
Campbell was recently appointed by the Government of Canada as the country’s representative to the Ismaili Imamat and also serves as Canada’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Posted December 26th, 2013 by librarian-hdHis Highness the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims yesterday committed himself to support democratic processes, to find means to help the ultra-poor, and to address political and theological tensions through consensus amongst all Muslims.
The Aga Khan was speaking at a ceremony that marked the 50th anniversary of his accession to the Ismaili Imamat. He succeeded his grandfather, Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah Aga Khan as the 49th hereditary Imam on 11th July 1957. The colourful ceremony was attended by over 250 leaders from the Ismaili community from some 25 countries.

The meeting preceded the signing of an agreement aimed at expanding the partnership between the two institutions. Prince Amyn Aga Khan, who signed the agreement on the Aga Khan's behalf, thanked the ADB for its long-standing cooperation and lauded the Bank's efforts to adopt a new long-term strategy this year in the face of growing challenges and opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.

There was no immediate word on the weight of the child. The 63-year-old Khan is the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslim community, which has a following of 12-15 million people worldwide.
