The poorest people in Africa and Asia are to be given access to home loans and insurance by a development agency to help drag them out of poverty and rebuild their lives after a disaster such as the devastating tsunami. The scheme would go beyond the small loans, known as microcredit and often as little as $US50 ($NZ69) given to farmers and entrepreneurs to set them up in business.
The Aga Khan Development Network said it aimed to expand its work to products including health insurance, education loans and savings accounts to the poorest people.

Please remember Plai Petch-Article by prince sadrudin Aga Khan 1997-12-29

Human beings don't have an elephant's memory and most of you have forgotten me.

My name was Plai Petch and I was shot dead by police one year ago - on Sunday, Dec 29, 1996 to be exact - shortly after breaking loose from a chain which kept me tied to a tree for 20 years at Wat Puet Udon, Pathum Thani.

The metal ring was biting into my leg and the pain was excruciating, yet I always let men take me back to my tree and never hurt anyone or caused any damage during the few times when I released myself in the past.

On a clear day, with binoculars, you can look across lake Geneva from Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan's office to the towers of his seventh century Chateau Bellerive, at least you could until yesterday, when he resigned after 12 years as UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Outside are well-kept lawns, winding paths, splendid great evergreens. It all seems a million miles away from the squalor and misery one associates with the very word refugee.
