11 October 1978
May I say first of all, my mission in Beirut is limited in time and in scope.
I have been sent here by the Secretary-General in connection with the hostilities in Beirut in the hope that the visit might contribute to the cessation of bloodshed. Now that we have a ceasefire, although a very fragile one, I am hoping that my visit here and the talks I had today, will contribute in a modest way to the consolidation of that ceasefire.

A Man For All Nations - Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan
Posted December 16th, 2020 by librarian-hdOn a clear day, with binoculars, you can look across lake Geneva from Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan's office to the towers of his seventh century Chateau Bellerive, at least you could until yesterday, when he resigned after 12 years as UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Outside are well-kept lawns, winding paths, splendid great evergreens. It all seems a million miles away from the squalor and misery one associates with the very word refugee.

QUOTE 535
The crisis of hunger is played out in a world that has more food than it knows what to do with...……..The vast sums paid to farmers here and in Europe to encourage them not to grow certain types of food provide a perverse contrast to the relatively small sums we are told would be needed to provide food for millions of hungry people; we can switch from a fitness workout on one channel, telling us how to fight "urban flab," to another where we are confronted with ghastly images of emaciated children

The Committee has before it today two seemingly routine matters: my Annual Report, and the periodic consideration of whether UNHCR should be continued. The agenda, appropriately terse, scarcely conceals its irony.

Saving the World One Art Poster at a Time 2012-01-20
Posted May 14th, 2015 by librarian-hdArt is a powerful emotional tool for creating awareness and fostering a commitment to change the world, even if each print makes just a small dent. Think Uncle Sam's "I Want You For The U.S. Army," Apple's "Think Different" and the "Wonderful Copenhagen" poster with a police officer helping a mother duck across the street with her small ducklings. If you want to disseminate information quickly and engage people, thought-provoking art posters are an effective medium.
