Ladies and Gentlemen:

It is a great honour to be invited here today to address this esteemed audience on such a relevant topic. Our title speaks of societies which are at once plural and peaceful—a goal which is important but also elusive. For even our best efforts to combine stability with modernity seem to be constantly disrupted.

This Agreement establishes the privileges, immunities and facilities extended by the Portuguese Republic to the Ismaili Imamat.

CHAPTER II SEAT OF THE ISMAILI IMAMAT Article 3

The Portuguese Republic shall ensure the conditions for the establishment of the Seat of the Ismaili Imamat within its territory as well as for the exercise of its functions , in accordance with the present agreement

AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE PORTUGUESE REPUBLIC AND THE ISMAILI IMAMAT

WHEREAS the 1976 Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and the Religious Freedom
Act enshrine, and Portugal acknowledges, the social importance of the religious
phenomenon, the commitment to the principle of non discriminatory treatment for the
different churches and religious communities and the need to establish enabling conditions
for all citizens to enjoy the freedom of conscience and the right to freely practise religion
and worship;

In an announcement that will have Portugal’s estate agents limbering up for the race of all time, the Aga Khan has announced that he will be moving his official residence to Portugal within the next five years. The news came on Wednesday, as the leader of the Shia Muslim order was due to meet with Foreign Affairs minister Rui Machete to sign an agreement to establish his global headquarters in Portugal.

As Machete told Público: “It is natural that an institution with an annual budget of between €600-€900 million will bring something to Portugal.”

H.H. The Aga Khan has arrived in Lisbon, Portugal and was welcomed at the airport by Mnister was received by Pedro Mota Soares of the Government of Portugal. According to news received from Portugal newspapers, H.H. The Aga Khan, Imam of the Ismailis, will be moving some of his institutions in Portugal where he may also build a residence. H.H. The Aga Khan is expected in the Country this week and more news will be posted in this section starting today.

H.H. The Aga Khan is expected to make large investments in Portugal in the next 5 years.
