Aga Khan, the chairman of Aga Khan Development network, arrived here today on a 12-day India visit during which he will meet President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Vice President Hamid Ansari.

Khan would preside over an inauguration ceremony to mark the completion of the restoration of Humayun's Tomb Heritage site tomorrow.

The restoration work at the heritage site has been carried out by the Aga Khan Trust.

This dissertation explores how ideas about cultural and religious difference motivate members of the Shi‘a Ismaili Khojas community in Mumbai to erect social boundaries around their community and reach out to others through volunteer service. As a minority within India’s Muslim minority, difference has been a particularly fraught issue for Ismailis throughout their history. Consequently, they have maintained strict boundary lines around religious institutions in their community, such as sharply restricting attendance at religious functions to Ismailis only.

Your Lordship, Municipal Councillors, Citizens of Bombay

You have been very gracious in offering this reception in My honour and I am most sincerely grateful for your kind hospitality and for the warm words which you have said to Me in your address. Perhaps the fact that I have visited this great metropolis five times in the last ten years does not convey possibly enough the very special significance which Bombay has always had for Me.

Mr. President of the Managing Council, Members, Ladies and Gentlemen

This, as you said Mr. President, is the 5th time that I have visited the Hospital in the last ten years. When I told the Federal Council of the Ismaili Community in India, that I would be visiting in this year, they said to Me, “certainly you never come to India”, and yet this is the fifth time in ten years and I do not believe I have visited any other area more often than India in the last ten years. I just want to get the record straight.

Mr President, Gentlemen

The topic I have chosen to talk to you about is wide and much too complicated to deal with fully in twenty minutes. I hope, however, to give you a sketch of what has been happening in East Africa during the last year or two, and in particular to give an idea of the role which the Asian communities have played, and the one which they have to play, whether they desire to or not, in the future.
