It is a particular pleasure for me to be amongst so many friends of the Ismaili community in the United Kingdom.

I cannot help reflecting upon the history which brings us all together in the heart of London, when standing here in The Ismaili Centre, so close to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Interview of Begum Salimah - 1979-11-07

Some time ago, Anne Matheson of the Australian Women's Weekly interviewed Begum Salimah in London just before Her Highness's visit with Mowlana Hazar Imam to Australia where they were invited as specia guests of honour for the 1979 Melburne Cup.

Here is a condensed version of the interview and a glimpse into the life of Begum Sahiba as wife, mother and worker.

At her Paris house, the oldest known building within the shadow of Notre Dame cathedral and once an abbey, photographer Alec Murry and I went up a circular stone staircase from the monastic entrance below street level.

September 30, 1987Your Excellencies My Lord Madam Mayor Ladies and Gentlemen It is a great honour for me to welcome Her Majesty the Queen of Jordan.
I would like to express our thanks and appreciation to Her Majesty for having made this visit to London to open the exhibition of Mr Nicholas Egon's paintings of Jordan.

Jordan inhabited since the earliest ages known to man, is a land in which many great civilisations have flourished, each leaving a precious legacy.

SILVER JUBILEE VISIT OF H. H. The Aga Khan - 1983-07-05

Over 15000 Ismailis gathered at Olympia on Tuesday July 5, 1983 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee. During the visit, Mowlana Hazar Imam had private meetings with institutions such as Oxfam, the Overseas Development Administrator and the University of London.

THE ZAMANA GALLERY - 1985-06-25

Mowlana Hazar Imam calls for a more informed perception of other nations' cultures as an effective gateway to better understanding.
The Zamana Gallery, a 550 square meter exhibition area located in the Ismaili Center, London, was officially opened on June 25th by the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Gowrie, Minister for the Arts, in the presence of Mowlana Hazar Imam.

MRS. THATCHER OPENS ISMAILI CENTRE, LONDON - 1985-04-24

Mowlana Hazar Imam Calls for Greater Understanding of Islam

The British Prime Minister, Mrs. Margaret Thatcher, officially opened the Ismaili centre in London on April 24th, 1985. Present at the ceremony were Mowlana Hazar Imam, Government Ministers, Members of Parliament, Diplomats and Leaders of the Ismaili Community from around the world.

H. H. The Aga Khan HONOURED BY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON - 1989-10-11

Mawlana Hazar Imam received an honourary degree of Doctor of Literature in Education on Wednesday, October 11, 1989, from the University of London, England.
Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, Chancellor of the University, conferred the degree on Mawlana Hazar Imam during the Founders Day Convocation Ceremony in which he was cited as 'a calm voice in troubled times, a world leader, uniquely placed to bridge the cultural differences dividing east and west.'

CENTURIES OF GOLD - 1986-07-02

Cromwell Gardens No.1, South Kensington, London SW7, is an address which every Ismaili recognises and is proud of, for that is the site of the Ismaili Centre London.
What is perhaps not known quite as well is that a large area of the ground and the lower ground floors of the Ismaili Centre is occupied by the ZAMANA GALLERY with its entrance directly opposite the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Time for conflict resolution has come, says Musharraf - 2003-06-20

President Gen Pervez Musharraf said on Friday it was not time for crisis management but conflict resolution for a lasting peace in South Asia.'The time for conflict management is over because another conflict is unthinkable. It is time for conflict resolution,' he told a distinguished gathering here on Friday.
He was speaking as guest of honour at 50th annual dinner hosted in his honour by the Pakistan Society at the Great Hall of Lincoln Inn here on Thursday.

Agha Khan University's Centre of English Language Karachi has won British Council commendation World Aware Business Award 2002 in recognition of its services for promoting English language in back areas of Gilgit, Chitral and Tajikistan.This reward was received by Sabahat Khan Tartari, senior member of the Agha Khan university and Associate Prof Muhammad Zafar of Centre of English Language from a senior official of the British Council. Sabahat and Prof Zafar are currently doing their post-graduation from WarWick university in the United Kingdom.
