Uganda's Posta launches new Aga Khan stamps - 2008-10-10

Eight new stamps featuring various development projects of the Aga Khan in Uganda have been issued by Posta Uganda. The stamps, which commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Aga Khan, were launched on Wednesday during celebrations to mark the World Post Day at the Posta office in Kampala.

The Aga khan Development Network (AKDN) is a network of institutions founded and led by Prince Karim Aga Khan, which collaborate with the governments and other organisation, towards improving living conditions and opportunities for people in some of the poorest parts of the developing world like Uganda.

Over 113 students on Saturday graduated with degrees and diplomas in Advanced Nursing Studies during the 6th graduation ceremony of Aga Khan University at Serena Hotel, Kampala.

Over 55 students were awarded Bachelors of Science Degrees in Nursing and 58 graduated with Diplomas in General Nursing.

Kampala, Uganda, November 10, 2006: President Yoweri Museveni and His Highness the Aga Khan inaugurated the new Kampala Serena Hotel on 10 November 2006, which is owned and operated by Tourism Promotion Services (TPS), an arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED). One of 17 Serena properties in Africa -- others are in Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and Mozambique -- the Kampala Serena will have a significant economic, social and cultural impact in Uganda.

Prince Amyn Aga khan, chairman of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development signed on behalf of TPS while Prof. Peter Kasenene signed on behalf of Government. The 30-year concession requires TPS to invest $18m in the refurbishment and upgrading of the hotel reopen in September 2005 as Kampala Serena hotel. We hope this initiative will advance tourism development in Uganda to spur to other investments. When it reopens, it will be a new concept,' Prince Aga Khan told reporters.
