The leaders of all African Countries today are faced with the need to raise the living standards of the mass of their peoples from mere subsistence level to a point where men and women can develop the full potential of their minds and bodies. The problem in Africa assumes urgent political dimensions if only because expectations are so much higher than they used to be. This is quite understandable when you remember the hopes that were raised during the battle for independence.

The third seminar of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture has come to an end. I would like to thank the President, the Government of Indonesia and in particular the Minister of Religion for the exceptionally warm and welcoming manner with which we have been permitted to see some of the low cost housing being developed or improved in Indonesia. I must also thank our Indonesian friends who have participated in the seminar: for explaining some of the problems they have had to resolve, the considerations and objectives which inspired them, and what they have achieved.

This speech was delivered at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hyderabad by H.R.H. The Agakhan in December, 1964.

I am grateful and honoured by your kind invitation to me to-night, and I am sincerely thankful to you for having given me this occasion to meet the industrial and business elite of this historical and beautiful city.

We have long been looking forward to our first visit to Indonesia and its famed capital of Jakarta; the warmth of our welcome here has more than equalled our expectations. We are sincerely honoured that His Excellency the Vice President of Indonesia has consented to preside at the seminar's opening function, and that His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hassan of Jordan has joined us. Not only is he a distinguished guest, but a highly qualified seminar participant; his experience in developing housing projects in Jordan will be of great interest to us all.

President Gregorian, faculty members, post graduates and graduating students, ladies and gentlemen.
President Gregorian, thank you for your very generous words. It is a great honour for me to be at this Commencement Ceremony at Brown, as Brown represents much of what is best in Western liberal education. Let me also congratulate the graduating students for whom the memory of this day, I am sure, will remain with them throughout their lives.

Your Excellency The President; Your excellency the Governor of Sind; Honourable Chief Minister of Sind; Honourable Ministers; Your Excellencies; Distinguished Guests.

Mr President, your unfaltering encouragement has enabled us to bring the Aga Khan University into being. To give the first private University in Pakistan your support was a bold initiative and one to which I wish to offer the fullest recognition.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman, for your very kind Address of Welcome. My wife and I are deeply grateful for your generous words and warm hospitality. This is our last official function before we leave Pakistan, having completed a five-week visit. It is particularly appropriate that we should say goodbye here because we began our journey in Iran and have thus just visited two of our three RCD countries. We have had the most magnificent reception everywhere we have been, and I say here on my wife's behalf as well as my own, a very warm and most grateful 'thank you' to everyone.

The Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently invited Mowlana Hazar Imam to address a full session of its Executive Board, which met at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
At the Executive Board's specific request, Hazar Imam's speech was preceded by a 30-minute slide presentation on the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) by Guillaume de Spoelberch, Executive Director of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and a member of the Board of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC).

Your Worships, Your Excellencies, My Lords, Ladies and Gentleman

It is a particular pleasure for me to be amongst so many friends of the Ismaili community in the United Kingdom.

I cannot help reflecting upon the history which brings us all together in the heart of London, when standing here in The Ismaili Centre, so close to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Speaking to an audience of 200 business leaders in Zurich (Monday, January 28) Mowlana Hazar Imam called on industrialised nations to expand their economic activity in the countries of the third world.

'May I first thank the Director of IPS for giving me further practice in the digestive art of delivering a speech in the middle of the day after a substantial luncheon. If you promise not to fall asleep. I will do my best to keep talking.

Right Honourable Prime Minister, the Honourable Premier of British Columbia, Honourable Ministers, Distinguished guests.Three years and one month ago, I had the honour of inviting the Former Lieutenant-Governor to lay the foundation stone of the building which we now see complete before us. Today it gives Me the very greatest pleasure to welcome the Prime Minister, Mr. Mulroney, and to thank him for agreeing to perform the opening ceremony.

Jordan inhabited since the earliest ages known to man, is a land in which many great civilisations have flourished, each leaving a precious legacy.

Pakistan's position and responsibility It has been my good fortune during the last seven years, on practically every tour I have made in Africa or Asia, to meet your brother Rotarians and to have the opportunity of talking to them. I have always enjoyed these encounters very much indeed as my community keeps me very busy, and it is rare that I should have such fine occasions to meet the elite in one function in the City I am visiting.
