The market at Nizamuddin basti is bustling with energy on a Thursday afternoon. There are some people chattering in front of a butchershop and children fighting while playing carom. The smell of fresh biryani fills the air as I walk through the winding lanes towards my destination, a kitchen called Zaika-e-Nizamuddin which is run entirely by a group of local women.

An initiative by the Aga Khan Foundation that began in 2012, Zaika-e-Nizamuddin was set up as part of a dual campaign to create employment opportunities for women and tackle the problem of malnutrition in this area.

Hyderabad: The Aga Khan Trust for Culture in collaboration with the State government and Tata Trust has completed conservation works on 25 monuments and landscape restoration over a 20 acres zone at Qutb Shahi Heritage Park.

The restoration initiative had master-craftsmen clocking 1,50,000 man-days of work to restore structural stability and grandeur of the monuments, a press release from Aga Khan Trust said.

The spiritual leader of the Ismaili sect Prince Karim Al Hussaini Aga Khan, founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network, visited the Aga Khan Academy here on Friday to review progress of the school.

The Aga Khan was accompanied by his son Prince AlyMuhammed, his daughter Princess Zahra and her children Sara and Iliyan. The visit to the academy allowed the Aga Khan to assess first-hand the progress made since his last visit in September 2013 when the school was formally inaugurated.

Work will start on the construction of the “country’s first” sunken museum on April 7 at the iconic Humayun’s Tomb site, which after its completion in 2017 will showcase the heritage of the Nizamuddin Area over the last seven centuries.

Expected to be completed in 30 months, the project has been pledged a fund of Rs 49 crore from the tourism ministry. Inspired from the medieval baolis (water tanks) of northern India, the underground site museum, with a built-up area of 9,000 square metre, will marry modern 21st century architecture with Mughal-era craftsmanship in its design.
