We are all aware that Cairo is a bustling city packed with cars and crowds galore, which is to be expected given that it is Egypt’s capital city and home to the magical Great Pyramids. Many assume that the city that doesn’t sleep lacks a place of quiet and serenity and even…endless green. Surprisingly to many, this isn’t the case, for in the heart of City lies a park filled with green gardens, beautiful architecture and interesting people.

Prince Aly Muhammad Aga Khan visited the Al-Azhar Park in Cairo this 28 January 2019. Egyptian first lady Suzanne Mubarak and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, a private agency which seeks to revitalize Muslim communities, inaugurated the largest public park built in Cairo in over a century in 2005

In this photo, the Ayyubid Wall is seen in the background. This historic wall lay buried for hundreds of years. It was built in 1176 by Salah al-Din, a Kurd of the Ayubbid clan who came to Cairo from Syria and led the armies which overthrew the reigning Fatimids

President Hosni Mubarak today discussed with His Highness the Aga Khan an integrated plan for development of Cairo's largest park, and innovative cultural restoration and economic revitalisation projects being undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in the capital's historic old city.

Cairo, 17 July 2007 – Cairo’s Governor, H.E. Dr. Abdel Azim Wazir, and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s General Manager, Mr. Luis Monreal, today signed an historic Public-Private Partnership (PPP) linking Al-Azhar Park, a future “Urban Plaza” project at the northern end of the Park, and ongoing work by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Darb al-Ahmar.

Twenty-one years ago we had a vision that launched us on a journey of inquiry, exploration and discovery that took us through some 1,000 years of history of this extraordinary city.

It was a journey in which we engaged with historians, archeologists, architects and horticulturalists. We worked with engineers, statisticians, sociologists and urban planners. We met with neighbourhood residents and businessmen, artisans and entrepreneurs, young people and old.
