Nato a Parigi nel 1933, l'Aga Khan era figlio di Mohammed Shaha Aga Khan III, della famiglia reale indiana.

Il principe ha creato la Fondazione Bellerive e ha presieduto l'associazione Alp Action, attiva nel campo della protezione delle Alpi.

Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, a wealthy philanthropist who held a string of top U.N. humanitarian posts and was the uncle of the spiritual leader of the Ismaili sect of Shiite Islam, has died, associates said Tuesday. He was 70.

Sadruddin died Monday at Massachusetts General hospital in Boston, said Nasir Sunderji, an official of the Geneva-based Bellerive foundation, an environmental organization founded by Sadruddin.

There were no immediate details on the cause of death.

«Le prince est mort au Massachusetts Boston Hospital», a indiqué un responsable de la communication de la Fondation Bellerive à Genève. Outre la Fondation Bellerive, le prince présidait l'association Alp Action, qui s'occupe de la protection de l'environnement dans les Alpes.
Il était l'oncle de Karim Aga Khan IV, chef spirituel des musulmans ismaéliens.

Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, a former head of the United Nations refugee agency and U.N. humanitarian envoy to Afghanistan, has died at age 70, his office said on Tuesday.

Sadruddin was uncle to the current Aga Khan, Karim, who is spiritual leader of the world's 15 million Ismaili Muslims.

A spokeswoman at his Geneva office confirmed he had died, but declined to give further details.

Swiss news agency ATS reported Sadruddin died in a Boston hospital in the United States on Monday after a long illness.

Prince Karim Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the world's Shia Ismaili Muslims, married Princess Gabrielle zu Liningen at his Aiglemont estate north of Paris, his office said. It was the second marriage for both. The prince, who is 61, is the 49th hereditary Imam of the Ismaili community and the son of Prince Aly Khan and Princess Joan Aly Khan. The creation of an agency aimed at expanding microfinance services in some of the world's poorest communities was announced yesterday by the Aga Khan development network with the support of the World Bank and donor governments.
The Aga Khan agency for microfinance will bring together the network's existing microfinance activities, now operating in 10 countries, and develop products relating to micro-insurance, small housing loans, savings accounts, education and health costs and small businesses.

Le prince habitait Genève depuis 1959. Il est décédé lundi à Boston des suites d'une longue maladie. Aga Khan ne se prenait pas pour n'importe qui. Et il ne l'était pas. Celui qui avait l'honneur de franchir les portes de son somptueux château de Bellerive ou, dans le cas particulier, de son hôtel de la Vieille-Ville, était reçu par un serviteur égyptien en livrée. The Aga Khan, billionaire spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili sect of Islam, said he would expand microcredit schemes by offering other financial services such as insurance for poor people in developing countries.
A new non-profit microfinance agency would deliver micro-insurance, small housing loans, savings, education or health accounts, and study new ways of providing a range of financial services to poor communities, he announced.

'Loans to health and education can break down the barriers to access to those services for the poor,' the Aga Khan told journalists.
