Dar es Salaam. Aga Khan University (AKU)'s introduction of direct enrollment for Form Six graduates into the nursing degree programme and the launch of the online Masters of Education programme mark a momentous leap in enhancing the education sector in Tanzania and East Africa.

Speaking to The Citizen today July 21, 2023, AKU officials said these initiatives not only create opportunities for individual growth and advancement but also contribute to the overall development of the region by addressing critical shortages in the healthcare and education sectors.

Senior instructor in the AKU School of Nursing and Midwifery, East Africa, Dr Stewart Mbelwa, said in the past the Nursing programme was only offered as an upgrading programme designed for registered nurses, but now fresh high school graduates can apply and enroll.

"This initiative offers an exceptional opportunity for aspiring nursing professionals who can now seamlessly pursue their career goals right after completing their secondary education," he said.

Dr Mbelwa said the School has all the required advanced equipment and laboratories to provide a quality programme for the students.

Dr Fortidas Bakuza from AKU’s Institute for Educational Development, East Africa, said the introduction of the online Master of Education programme was designed with the modern educator in mind, understanding the time constraints faced by working teachers who want to advance their careers.

He said that through the programme, teachers can continue to serve their communities while simultaneously acquiring advanced qualifications.

"The asynchronous nature of the programme allows participants to access lectures, coursework, and discussions at their own pace, accommodating diverse schedules and time zones," he said.
