As Parliament Hill readies itself to shut down for the weekend, both the prime minister and his official opposition counterpart are heading off to Toronto for the day -- separately, not convoy-style, mind you -- at least, as far as we know, although come to think of it, that really would cut down on travel costs, especially when you consider how closely aligned their respective itineraries seem to be. After all, both leaders are scheduled to speak at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' annual conference: the PM delivers the opening keynote address this morning, and the Liberal leader hits the stage tonight.

Later today, Michael Ignatieff will be in attendance when the PM bestows honourary Canadian citizenship on the Aga Khan.

Back in Ottawa, it's shaping up to be another frantically busy day for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews. Not only will he almost certainly be facing more pointed questions on the burgeoning $1.1 billion security bill for the upcoming G8/20 summits, but his office has not one but two public events planned for today. First up: a morning press conference at Ottawa Hydro, of all places, where Toews will be accompanied by Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Hector Goudreau and Ontario Community Safety Minister Rick Bartolucci, at which he will reportedly reveal the details of the government's infrastructure security program, and this afternoon, he heads to Montreal, where he'll meet up with Revenue Minister Keith Ashfield for an announcement on contraband tobacco, which will also include a "detector dog demonstration", courtesy of the Canadian Border Services Agency.

Meanwhile, the NDP will try to take advantage of the usual Friday news vacuum by convening a press conference to reveal their party's "plan of action" on maternal and child health, and finally, prime ministerial communications director Dimitri Soudas holds a technical background briefing on his boss's upcoming overseas jaunt.

That's about it, as far as the official agenda. I'll keep you posted on any new developments.
