The Pan Africa media conference , in Nairobi, brought together prominent personalities in media, business, governments, civil society, and academia across the world.
Some of the 40 eminent guests lined up to grace the event include the Aga Khan, Nobel laureate Prof Wangari Maathai, former South Africa’s president Thabo Mbeki, telecom investor Mo Ibrahim, and former UN secretary general Kofi Annan. The conference key theme is Reflections on the past, present, and prospects for the future.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the inaugural Pan Africa Media Conference to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Nation Media Group, which was founded by the Aga Khan, His Highness stated that the School will be dedicated to advancing excellence in media performance and the strengthening of ethical media practices throughout the developing world.

This is that we are a vibrant democracy surrounded by authoritarian states. Indeed I would say that some of the nations in our neighbourhood are "militaristic authoritarian states". Think about it for a minute.
In Tanzania, it's only now for the first time that there is a genuine chance of the opposition parties wresting power from the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), which has ruled since independence.
For all intents and purposes, Tanzania has been a single party state for the last 50 years.

The School, whose initial campus will be situated in Nairobi, will aim to foster a critical mass of diverse, media leaders, enterprises and institutions distinguished by the highest standards of competence, ethics, professionalism and social responsibility. It is anticipated that the School will be formally launched in 2011, although some of its activities may begin later this year.

The Pan African Conference got underway on Thursday in Nairobi, attracting an attendance of media experts and political leaders in discussing the role of media in an African democracy.
Chief guest President Kibaki set the pace with an acknowledgement on “the advent of citizen journalism has become possible because of tools such as SMS, blogs and social networking websites such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Myspace.”

The Aga Khan on Thursday pledged to uphold free media. Speaking at the Pan Africa Media Conference in Nairobi, the founder of the Nation Media Group gave a firm commitment to remain focused on independent news coverage.
He told the conference that he started Nation in 1960 with the belief that newly independent African nations would thrive well where there was an independent media. He holds the same belief for the future.

Nation media group staff were treated to a sumptuous breakfast as Celebrations to mark 50 years continued. Long serving members of staff were also awarded at the function held at the KICC by His Highness the Aga Khan. Listen to what His HIghness says:
As part of marking its 50th anniversary Nation Media Group on Thursday night hosted a dinner for delegates and dignitaries at the KICC. Vice president Kalonzo Musyoka lauded NMG for its bravery attitude of exposing vices like corruption and nepotism.
The Nation Media Group is exactly 50 years today(Thursday) and the highlight of the celebrations, the Pan Africa media Conference was opened on Thursday morning by president Mwai Kibaki. At the opening ceremony, the president lauded the role played by the media in opening up the democratic space.
Earlier in the morning, the company announced a special share offer for its employees as part of the celebrations. The announcement came as the staff met the Groups founder His Highness the Aga Khan at a breakfast session.
