H.H. THE AGA KHAN TO RECEIVE U OF T HONORARY DEGREE</I> - 2004-06-17
TORONTO (CP) - If University of Toronto education students get a 'holier than thou' feeling from their convocation speaker this year, it's only because it is his Highness, the Aga Khan, a direct descendent of the Prophet Muhammed. The Muslim spiritual leader will be in Toronto on Friday to receive an honorary doctor of laws from the university for his 'outstanding contributions to community service, higher education and philanthropy,' university officials said.

President Birgeneau,
Dean Gaskell,
Members of the Governing Council,
Faculty,
Students and Parents,
Fellow Graduates,
I thank you for your warm welcome, and am deeply moved by the honour that this renowned institution of learning has done of conferring upon me the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. I accept this award with much happiness, but also a profound sense of humility, cognisant that many men and women, of higher distinction and more notable achievements, are also being recognised, joining an illustrious line of previous recipients.

Following a year’s leave of absence for official visits to Muslim communities around the world, the Aga Khan returned to Harvard as an undergraduate to complete his AB honours degree in Islamic History.
