As I have done my work, over the past decades, I’ve concluded that one of the most important forces in development is civil society. If you think about the countries around the world which have had fragile governments but which have still made progress, there are umpteen examples of countries which have made progress, because they have had strong civil society.

On 9 July, Prince Amyn Aga Khan was conferred with the Medal of Honour of the City of Porto by the Mayor of Porto Mr. Rui Moreira in recognition of his patronage to the arts. Municipal medals aim to recognise distinguished individuals for their personal merits or civic deeds as well as municipal officials for the performance of their duties. The Medal of Honour of the City is Porto’s highest distinction and acknowledges those who have rendered services of exceptional relevance or who have distinguished themselves in areas of human activity.

Porto, Portugal 2 May 2019 – The Mayor of Porto Mr Rui Moreira today conferred His Highness the Aga Khan with the Keys to the City of Porto. The presentation occurred in the presence of His Highness’s brother Prince Amyn Aga Khan, the President of the Municipal Assembly of Porto, Mr Miguel Pereira Leite as well as a distinguished audience which included members of the diplomatic corps, government and parliament representatives, cultural leaders and civil society representatives as well as representatives from the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
