AGA KHAN LAUNCHES CAMPUS FOR MODEL SCHOOL AT COAST - 2007-08-15

A multi-million shilling residential campus was inaugurated at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa yesterday.Kenya’s Education Minister, Professor George Saitoti, today laid the foundation stone for the construction of the new Residential Campus at the Aga Khan Academy in Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa, in the presence of His Highness the Aga Khan.
The residential campus will transform the Academy from a high quality day school attended by Mombasa-area students to a residential campus serving students of all backgrounds from across Kenya.

H.H.The Aga Khan in Mombasa - 2009-07-25
Posted April 20th, 2010 by heritage2009, July 25: H.H.The Aga Khan arrived in Mombasa on 22nd July for AKDN work, meetings with government officials in the East Africa region. He landed in Nairobi on 25th and will be visiting the AKUH the next day leaving on 28th for Dar es Salaam and then heading to Zanzibar for the opening of the Forodhani Park on 30th. Princess Zahra is presently in Nairobi since 20th July for AKU Board of Trustees meetings.

JUBILEE INSURANCE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS - 1986-10-27
Posted March 24th, 2010 by heritageTo commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the incorporation of the Jubilee insurance Company, a reception was held at the Serena Hotel in Mombasa on 27th October 1986.
Present at the reception were Prince Amyn Mohamed, the Commissioner of Insurance, Mr. Adam H. Ali, the Provincial Commissioner, Coast Province, and His Worship the Mayor of Mombasa.

PRINCE SADRUDIN AGA KHANS VISIT TO MOMBASA - 1986-01-05
Posted March 24th, 2010 by heritagePrince Sadrudin, Princess Aleya and their friends were recently in Mombasa for their annual holidays and spent a fortnight at their Bahati Villa on the South Coast.
Prince Sadrudin travelled by road from Nairobi to Mombasa after having just arrived by air on Monday 23rd December, 1985. Representatives from the Mombasa Provincial Council welcomed the party at the Likoni Ferry that evening.

MADRASSAH PROJECT IN MOMBASA WINS ACCLAIM OF MOTHERS AND WAALIMS - 1986-06-01
Posted March 24th, 2010 by heritageIn June 1986, the Aga Khan Foundation's Board approved a three-year project to improve early childhood educational opportunities for children of traditional Muslim communities in Mombasa, Kenya. Because the only instruction these children were receiving at a young age was religious, they were unable to compete successfully for places in primary school where simple reading and numerical skills were a prerequisite for entry into the formal school system.

Rethink education policies - 2003-12-22
Posted February 25th, 2010 by heritageSpeaking during the inauguration of the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, His Highness the Aga Khan, rooted for the expansion of higher education opportunities to absorb the thousands of students who graduate from secondary school. He illustrated the point by citing figures indicating that only about 15 per cent of high school leavers ever proceed to university in many developing countries. In Kenya, less than 10 per cent of school leavers go on to university.

Aga Khan visits sites of proposed campuses - 2003-02-21

He said the centres, which would be international and indigenous, would help mould the youth into leaders of tomorrow.
'Africa and the developing world can help create centres of educational excellence that will, at the same time, be international and indigenous, and that will help mould young men and women from all walks of life and all parts of the world into the leaders of tomorrow,' he said.

Aga Khan project donates Sh4m to Mombasa projects - 2002-10-03
Posted February 25th, 2010 by heritageThirteen selected projects in Mombasa yesterday benefited from a Sh4 million community relations programme launched by the Tsavo Power Company.
The organisation's chief executive officer, Mr Michael Fox, presented certificates to the projects to Coast Provincial Commissioner Samuel Limo, at his office. The PC, in turn, handed them over to representatives of the projects.
Beneficiaries included the Bombolulu Centre for the Physically Handicapped, which received Sh488,000, Ziwani School for the Deaf and the Likoni School for the Blind (Sh468,000 each).

Aga Khan Academy inaugurated - 2003-12-31
Posted February 25th, 2010 by heritageThe Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa, the first in an international network of about 20 academic centres of excellence, was inaugurated on Tuesday by Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki in the presence of the Aga Khan.The Aga Khan Academies will feature a curriculum based on the International Baccalaureate (IB) and a system of international student and teacher exchanges between academies as well as with allied schools, including Phillips Academy, in the United States, and the Schule Schloss Salem, in Germany.
