The greatest untapped resource in the developing world is people. When there is a shortage of properly trained manpower, development projects may be ineffective and valuable resources wasted.
The Aga Khan University, established in 1971, addressed this issue. On the University's Karachi campus, for example, the Faculty of Health Sciences is working to strengthen the nursing profession in Pakistan, where there is only one nurse for every three doctors. The Faculty's School of Nursing, opened in 1980, is now attracting outstanding young women from all areas of the country.
