KARACHI: At least two knowledgeable ruling politicians and a few senior Pakistani officials are crediting intense background efforts of spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, Prince Karim Aga Khan, for diplomatic breakthrough between Islamabad and New Delhi that in the past few days again ignited hope of a durable peace. Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee surprised the world in the past two weeks when he suddenly reversed the belligerent Indian stance of equating Pakistan with Saddam Hussain's Iraq by offering 'decisive' peace talks and restoration of full diplomatic relations with Pakistan. Informed senior Pakistani officials and top ruling politicians have now said that they believed that besides the continuing diplomatic pressure from Washington, the personal efforts of Prince Karim Aga Khan over the past two weeks played a crucial role in encouraging the Indian leadership, particularly Prime Minister Vajpayee, to initiate fresh efforts to resolve Kashmir issue with Pakistan. 'It seemed that Aga Khan devoted much of his time behind the glare of publicity in April in breaking ice between New Delhi and Islamabad,' divulged an informed a diplomatic source, who didn't want to be identified.

Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali is expected to announce reciprocal measures to turn the Indo-Pakistan thaw into a virtual flood at a public rally in the north-west city of Mansehra, 70km north of Islamabad amid intense speculation he will announce resumption of overflights and more importantly, name an envoy to India.A government official said he would announce 'an important initiative' at the rally.
Pakistan has not yet officially declared reciprocal moves.

The efforts of the Aga Khan, apart from US diplomatic pressure, is being seen as a factor, behind the recent attempts towards creating a 'thaw' in Indo-Pak relations, a leading Pakistani newspaper has reported.

Prince Karim Aga Khan, thespiritual leader of Ismaili community, was given a warm send-off today at Chaklala airbase. Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Northern Areas, States and Frontier Regions, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao seen off the distinguished guest. During his three days stay in Pakistan, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan held meetings with President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Mir Zafar Ullah Khan Jamali, Chairman Senate, Ministers of Finance, Privatization and Education besides meeting with staff of Aga Khan Development Network in Pakistan.
