Prince Sadruddin started his long career with the United Nations as an adviser to UNESCO for Afro-Asian projects. He was among the youngest and longest-serving U.N. high commissioners for refugees, taking over the post in 1965 at age 33 and staying for 12 years.

High Commissioner for Human Rights Sergio Vieira de Mello has expressed his profoundest sorrow over the death yesterday of Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan. He conveys his condolences to Prince Sadruddin's wife, Princess Catherine Aleya Aga Khan, to his nephew, Karim, the Aga Khan, and to the rest of his family.
