Seven winners of the 1998 Aga Khan Award for Architecture were announced yesterday.

They range from a private house to a palace and from a leper hospital to a state parliament building. They also include two imaginative schemes for regenerating an old town and an area of slums and a building to house an arts council.

The ceremony took place yesterday at The Alhambra and Generalife Gardens in Granada, Spain, in the presence of the King and Queen of Spain and the Aga Khan and the Begum Aga Khan.

Former South African president Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel landed in Madrid for the wedding, as did former Czech President Vaclav Havel and the presidents of Portugal, Colombia, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Royalty arriving in Madrid included Dutch Queen Beatrix, the kings and queens of Belgium and Sweden, the Aga Khan and the crown princes of Norway and Bahrein. La muestra, que inauguran hoy el Rey Juan Carlos y el Príncipe Aga Khan en las salas de exposiciones de CaixaFumun Madrid, pretende además de acercar al público objetos artísticos de gran belleza, la mayoría de ellos nunca exhibidos en España, subsanar el gran desconocimiento que existe con respecto al islám.

Madrid is currently hosting the exhibition "The Islamic Worlds in the Aga Khan Museum Collection" which shows some of the greatest treasures of Islamic art, from ancient al-Andalus to India.

The exhibition, available until September 6, 2009, will travel several other cities such as Barcelona, Onculture.eu said.

The art, the history, the traditions and the geographies of the Islamic world from the Far East to the Iberian Peninsula are the subjects of the exhibition The Worlds of Islam in the Aga Khan Museum Collection.
