The unveiling of the Aga Khan University Hospital’s Nakawa Specialty Centre marks a significant stride in Uganda’s healthcare landscape, offering a diverse range of specialized outpatient services. Nestled along the Old Port Bell Road, this pioneering facility, situated on the inaugural Aga Khan University campus in Kampala, delivers vital services including chemotherapy, dialysis, and cutting-edge diagnostic imaging such as CT scans, mammography, neurophysiology, and ultrasound.

With a comprehensive roster of specialists encompassing gynaecology, paediatrics, cardiology, oncology, and endocrinology, among others, the Centre aims to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare to the Ugandan populace. Complementing these medical services are provisions for physiotherapy, dentistry, as well as laboratory and pharmacy services.

Inaugurating the Centre, State Minister for Health Margaret Muhanga commended the Aga Khan University’s steadfast commitment to investing in Uganda’s health and education sectors. “The Nakawa Specialty Centre stands poised to enhance access to specialized healthcare, diminishing the necessity for overseas travel,” she remarked. “The government remains steadfast in its pledge to furnish quality healthcare to all citizens, and we are privileged to collaborate with esteemed partners like the Aga Khan University.”

Adding to the accolades, Aga Khan University President and Chancellor Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin recognized the pivotal role of philanthropic donors, exemplified by Mr. and Mrs. Manji, in realizing the Nakawa Specialty Centre.

This latest addition to the Aga Khan University Hospital’s network in Kampala, alongside existing facilities at the Acacia Mall, Metroplex Mall Naalya, and the DTB building, reinforces the institution’s commitment to delivering world-class healthcare services in Uganda. Rashid Khalani, CEO of the Aga Khan University Hospital, underscored the Centre’s state-of-the-art infrastructure designed to facilitate precise diagnosis and prompt treatment.

With construction underway for a seven-story University Centre and a nine-story student housing complex on AKU’s Kampala campus, anticipation mounts for the commencement of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Kampala, slated for the coming year. “The establishment of this hospital and campus heralds a transformative era,” proclaimed AKU President Sulaiman Shahabuddin. “We envision an integrated network of premier healthcare and educational institutions spanning East Africa.”

Through its network of five hospitals and over 100 clinics, serving more than 2 million patients annually across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, AKU and the Aga Khan Health Services remain steadfast in their mission to provide exemplary healthcare. “The inauguration of the Nakawa Specialty Centre epitomizes our dedication to bringing top-tier healthcare within reach for Ugandans,” affirmed Amb. Amin Mawji, Diplomatic Representative of the Aga Khan Development Network in Uganda.

The Kampala initiative represents one of AKU’s largest investments in East Africa to date, poised to significantly expand the University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery while facilitating the training of medical specialists across various disciplines. With nearly two dozen specialties on offer, the Aga Khan University Hospital in Kampala is poised to revolutionize healthcare delivery in the region.

Having been an integral part of Uganda’s healthcare landscape for 24 years, AKU continues its legacy of nurturing healthcare professionals. In Kampala alone, over 1,400 nurses and midwives have graduated, serving in both public and private sectors across the nation. Furthermore, AKU’s impact extends beyond healthcare, with hundreds of teachers and journalists benefiting from its educational programs. In total, nearly 5,000 professionals have graduated from AKU, enriching communities across East Africa.
