Mowlana Hazar Imam and Begum Saheba were guests of Mr. Alexandre Hay, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, at a luncheon a the ICRC Headquarters in Geneva on Monday May 20th.
The luncheon marked the announcement of a grant made by the Aga Khan Foundation towards a communications training project, directed at enabling the ICRC's information Department to implement a media outreach programme. This programme has as its objectives, fostering cooperation with developing countries through study visits by Red Cross Staff to Third World countries, organizing regional seminars, and improving the practical skills and international contacts of its personnel. The three-year grant, of U.S. Dollars 125,000 will also include the preparation of a communications manual to be used in training Red Cross delegates.

The Aga Khan Foundation which is a private, non-denominational, philathrepic network with its headquarters in Geneva, has branches and affiliates in eight countries in both the developing and the developed world. The Foundation seeks to promote social development in low-income countries of Asia and Africa through selected investments in health, education and rural development emphasizing innovative, action-oriented programmes, whose results can be rapidly comunicated to other institutions with similar objectives.

The Aga Khan Foundation is currently working in cooperation with over 30 development organizations including UNICEF, WHO, the Canadian International Development Agency, the Overseas Development Administration of the United Kingdom, Oxfam and Ford Foundation.

Mowlana Hazar Imam has for many years had a personal interest in the media in the Third World. In 1958, Hazar Imam established 'Nation Printers and Publishers Limited' in Kenya, one of the largest printing and newspaper publishing groups in independent Africa. In 1984, Hazar Imam was associated with the establishment of 'Compass', a news features agency based in Luxembourg, which is dedicated to reporting issues os significance to the developing world.
