Shades of Shergar as Aga rules again with Alamshar - 2003-07-26

Alamshar produced an exemplary performance to trounce a smart field in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot, winning by three-and-a-half lengths from Sulamani, with the Derby winner, Kris Kin, a further two lengths away in third to give the Aga Khan his second winner of the race following Shergar in 1981. To be successful at the top level of horse racing, you need a lot of money and at least a little luck.
Every now and then, a dollop of patience pays off, too.

On Saturday at Ascot, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond stakes turned into a battle between two guys with plenty of money and more than a little luck, leaving patience to tip the balance.

Alamshar's owner the Aga Khan said: 'I am very pleased indeed. 'Alamshar and Dalakhani both had logical reasons to run in the Irish Derby and before that race I did say that I was aiming Alamshar at this race. Dalakhani is having an autumn campaign.
'The two horses had a programme that was going to clash in the Irish Derby but probably not after that but who knows.

'I think Alamshar has improved since his Irish Derby victory. I really don't know if Alamshar and Dalakhani will meet again.

'Good horse's programmes need to be developed race by race and that is what I am trying to do.

So now we have another superhorse, ephemeral as he may be. Alamshar is now king of all he surveys, so much better than the previously disgraced three-year-old station he was representing in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, so much better than the older generation massed against him.
