Pan Am flame lights up Aga Khan Park’s debut

The flame for the Pan Am games was a big attraction in the city Sunday, but first the people of Don Mills had a park to welcome.

Visitors to the first major public event at the beautiful Aga Khan Park had plenty to enjoy. The park, located between the Aga Khan Museum and the Ismaili Centre, has reflecting pools, green spaces and trees.

The Pan Am flame will be making its way to the recently opened Aga Khan Park on Sunday, July 5 with the community invited to attend the celebratory event.

Sometimes works of art spring from a flash of inspiration. Just as often, they come from years of reflection, planning, revision and collaboration. In the case of the new Aga Khan Park, it was a mix of the two.

The Aga Khan joined Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne for the opening of a new garden retreat in the heart of Toronto.

The 6.8 hectare park is located just off the Don Valley Parkway, a major municipal expressway. The park was designed by landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic, and was inspired by traditional Persian and Mughal gardens.

"What we have here is an absolutely unique park here in Toronto," Aga Khan Museum Director Henry Kim told CTV's Canada AM on Monday.

Premier Kathleen Wynne will inaugurate the Aga Khan Park in the presence of His Highness the Aga Khan, founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network, and spiritual leader (Imam) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, in Toronto on Monday, 25 May 2015.

Toronto, 24 May 2015 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in Canada today in advance of the Inauguration of the Aga Khan Park. Hazar Imam is accompanied during his visit by Prince Amyn and Prince Hussain.

Upon his arrival, Mawlana Hazar Imam was received on behalf of the Government of Ontario by the Honourable Michael Coteau, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport.
