Carnegie awards for philanthropy handed out at Holyrood - 2005-10-05

They joined four others who were handed the Andrew Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy during a ceremony at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Also honoured in the awards were Agnes Gund, chairwoman of the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Cadbury chocolate family and the Hewlett and Packard families.

Posted July 9th, 2009 by heritageBillionaire racehorse owner the Aga Khan holds his trophy after being presented with a prestigious award for philanthropy, at the Scottish parliament, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Tuesday Oct. 4, 2005. The Aga Khan recieved the Andrew Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy, an accolade widely regarded as the philanthropy world's equivalent of the Nobel Prize. The ceremony was the first time the event, inaugurated in 2001 and held every two years, had taken place outside the United States.

Dr. Robinson, thank you for your most generous remarks. It is especially humbling to hear these kind words from an individual of such great accomplishment, who has served not only her own country with distinction, but also the global cause of human rights.

Among the six recipients of the international Andrew Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy was the Aga Khan, one of the world's wealthiest men.
The Scottish founder of Kwik Fit, Sir Tom Farmer, received his medal from First Minister Jack McConnell.
This is the first time the awards - meant to be similar to the Nobel prize - have been presented outside the US.

Mkapa lauds micro-finance institutions - AGA KHAN RECIEVES CARNEGIE MEDAL - 2005-10-04
Posted July 9th, 2009 by heritagePresident Benjamin Mkapa has applauded micro-finance institutions for improving the livelihood of the poor who are usually left out by big banks in provision of credit facilities.
''The very small loan of only a few dollars can assist a rural resident to acquire farming implements like, say a water pump to improve the productivity of his land,'' President Mkapa said.
Speaking yesterday in Berlin, the president paid glowing tribute to Aga Khan Development network at a function to award His Highness The Aga Khan Die Quadriga, a United We Care Award.
