World media executives and political leaders are streaming in Nairobi ahead of a four-day International Press Institute (IPI) Summit to begin Sunday to discuss Africa's image problems and governance. The conference is to be addressed by key African political leaders and media luminaries, among them Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Kenya President Mwai Kibaki and Nobel literature Laureate Wole Soyinka. It will tackle modalities of improving the practice of journalism and safeguarding the freedom of the press in Africa and the world, organizers said.

The Aga Khan and Nobel literature laureate Wole Soyinka are among the delegates expected at the International Press Institute's 54th Annual Congress in Nairobi.
IPI board and forum members and their spouses last evening attended a dinner hosted by the Serena Group ahead of the three-day talks, which officially open tomorrow.

The congress has attracted top editors and media executives, with special guests from 53 countries.

Issues concerning Press freedom in Africa, reporting the Islamic world and good governance will be highlighted, with keynote speakers from around the world.

The International Press Institute (IPI) will hold its 2005 World Congress in Nairobi, Kenya, in May, where it will focus attention on what it calls 'the great strides' the country is making, including press freedom and freedom of expression.Eminent public leaders have been invited to speak at the conference, including Nobel Prize winners Wangari Maathai and Wole Soyinka, His Highness the Aga Khan, Graca Machel Mandela and US Senator Barack Obama. Kenya's President, Mwai Kibaki, will open the conference, which runs from 21 to 24 May 2005.
