Reportedly, 2400 square miles of the Gwadar area came under the domain of the Sultan of Oman in 1947. It was administered by Great Britain, and fifty percent of the revenue from the area went to the Sultan. Eventually, an American company identified Gwadar’s potential as a deep port. Through this port, 25 varieties of fish could be exported in significant quantities every year.
The Shah of Iran tried to acquire this land through the US’ influence in Britain, but in 1956, Pakistani Foreign Minister Malik Feroze Khan Noon decided that this land had to be acquired at all costs.
This role was assigned to Madam Viqar-un-Nisa Noon, who played a pivotal role in convincing the British government to hand over Gwadar to Pakistan. After two whole years of hectic efforts, the Sultan of Oman agreed to hand Gwadar over to Pakistan for $3 million, which was mostly paid by Prince Karim Agha Khan. This is how Pakistan got Gwadar on September 8, 1958.In 2002, General Pervez Musharraf planned the construction of the Gwadar deep port, which ultimately developed into the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Aga Khan University, Aga Khan Foundation, Aga Khan Education Services and Aga Khan Rural Support programs are some of the organizations of Aga Khan Development network which are working in Pakistan.
Sir Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan, the Grandfather of Prince Karim Aga Khan, played an active role in Pakistan’s independence. He was of the view that only education can change the destiny of Muslims of the subcontinent as this vision guided him to establish Aligarh Muslim University which was not only the desire of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan but also an indispensable need of Muslims at that time. Whenever the subcontinent came under the onslaught of infectious diseases, he stepped out to support masses in different ways.
After independence, Sir Sultan Mohammad Shah Aga Khan paid a sizable amount of money to Pakistan for procuring Gwadar Port from Oman which is nowadays a beacon of hope for Pakistan’s frail economy as Pakistan has pinned its hope on CPEC.
Prince Karim Aga Khan has been awarded countless awards, titles and honorary degrees for his marvellous contributions to humanity. His yet another move for the sake of humanity is laudable and exemplary.

Gwadar became part of Pakistan by negotiations led by Prime Minister of Pakistan Feroz Khan Noon and his wife Viqar-un-Nisa Noon with the Sultan of Oman. The Sultan of Oman agreed to hand Gwadar over to Pakistan for Rs 5.5 Billion,[23] which was mostly paid by Aga Khan IV. (Wikipedia)
