One of the world's most respected architectural awards, the 9th.Aga Khan Foundation Awards for Architecture, went this year to the B2 House designed by Turkish architect Han Tumertekin for Bilsar Tekstil's owners Selman and Suha Bilal. In the contest, which aims to understand and evaluate Islamic culture through architecture, a jury of nine people including artists, philosophers, architects and city planners evaluated 378 projects from 44 countries.Costing about $140,000, the B2 House's blend of comfort and design aspects with its innovative design won Tumertekin the award. The country house by Tumertekin is in the Buyukhusun village near Ayvalik by the Dardanelle Straights. The Aga Khan Awards ceremony was held yesterday at the ancient Indian Sovereign Humayun's Tomb in New Delhi, India, attended by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ministers, top diplomats, architects, and bureaucrats. Tumertekin and Selman and Suha Bilal were there to receive the award, which has been given every three years since 1977 to support improvement of an architectural understanding to maintain traditional cultural values with contemporary innovations. Criteria for the candidates are that the construction should be built in the 12-year period before the awards in a Muslim country and used for at least one year. The Aga Khan Award has previously been earlier granted to other Turkish architects including Turgut Cansever, Ertan Cakirlar, Nail Cakirhan and Behruz Cinici.
