Akiyda Captures Prix de l'Arc - 1982-10-04
The Aga Khan's Akiyda made a bold move along the rail and won by a head from fast-closing Ardross today in the $285,000 Prix de l'Arc Triomphe at the Longchamps race course.
Akiyda was ridden by the top French jockey, Yves Saint-Martin, who posted his third triumph in this event, Europe's richest thoroughbred horse race.
Ardross, sent off at 11-1 and ridden by Lester Piggott, was second in a photo finish with Awaasif, a 75-1 shot ridden by Willie Carson. Akiyda, a 3-year-old filly, won the 61st edition of the race in the stretch as the favorites, Assert and Bikala, faded after leading into the final turn.
Assert, a doubtful starter because of soggy track conditions, and Bikala led from the gate to the homestretch of the 2,400-meter race, but both appeared to tire and were overtaken. Akiyda found an opening along the rail and streaked across the finish line.
