The President of Zanzibar, Dr. Salmin Amour, has expressed his desire to see the Isles becoming a mercantile centre to oversee transfer of commodities between the outside world and the African continent.

Inaugurating the new Zanzibar Stone Town Cultural Centre here at the week-end, Dr. Amour further expressed his desire to see Zanzibar becoming another Dubai— or to be more exact, another Singapore.

He paid a glowing tribute to His Highness the Aga Khan and his entire working group for their effort to promote tourism in Tanzania.

Dr. Amour said measures were being taken to improve telecommunications facilities in the Isles.

Earlier, His Highness the Aga Khan urged the Zanzibaris to ensure that investments that have been made are meaningful to the Isles' economy.

Restoration of the old dispensary here to house the culture center is among activities being undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture which focus on rehabilitation and revitalisation of the Historic Stone Town area.

The Aga Khan Tourism Promotion Services has repaired an old building converting it into the 52-bedroom Zanzibar Serena hotel which was officially opened by President Mkapa last Saturday.
