Various Sources SUNNAH Encyclopedia TopicSunnah literally means a way or rule or manner of acting or mode of life. Sunnah was a word in vogue in pre-Islamic Arabia. The Arabs used it for the past customs and exemplary conduct left by their ancestors. The Koranic verses indicate that the term sunnah denotes practice or behaviour (35:43, 48:23). Thus, sunnat al-awwalin (8:38, 15:13, 18:55, 35:43) means the way or example of the former people, and is frequently used in the Koran as signifying God's way of dealing with the people, which is also spoken of sunnat
Encyclopaedia of Ismailism by Mumtaz Ali Tajddingeneral SUNNISEncyclopedia TopicThe word sunni literally means one who is a traditionist. They are called the "people of custom and community" (ahl al-sunnah wa'l-jama'a). The Sunnis number majority of the total Muslim population of the world, in which the Hanafis being the largest. They recognized the first four caliphs and accept the legitimacy of the Umayyad and the Abbasid caliphates. The Sunni emphasized the teaching of the Koran and the Sunnah of the Prophet along with the collective judgment of the Companions as authoritative source of Islamic legislation. The Sunnis stand fast by both the letter and the spirit of the law emanating from these three sources. The Sunnis believe that the words and deeds of the Prophet must be followed in every walk of life. They are divided into four schools of law i.e., Hanafis, Sha'afis, Malikis and Hanbalis, deriving their guidance from the Koran and hadiths as primary sources, and ijma (consensus of opinion) and qiyas (analogical deduction) as the secondary sources. The Sunnis offer five daily prayers, give zakat, fast in the month of Ramzan and perform the hajj to Mecca if they are able to do so. The Sunnis also believe like the Shi'as in the articles of faith: belief in the Oneness of God, the angels, the sacred scriptures, the finality of the last Prophet and the last day.
"Outwardly" writes Frithjof Schuon, "the Prophet is legislator, and he can easily be grasped as such; inwardly, in his substance, he represents esoterism at every level

Various Sources SURA Encyclopedia TopicThe Koran is divided into 114 chapters, each of which is called sura. The word sura (pl. suwar) is derived from sur, meaning a boundary wall of a city, thus sura means a part or chapter of the Koran separated by other. The word sura occurs 9 times in the Koran in singular and once in the plural form. Sura Baqara is the longest sura and Sura Kawthar is the shortest. Each sura contains a specific name.
There are in all 114 suras in the Koran, out of which 86 were revealed in Mecca, or before the migration of the Prophet, and 28 suras were revealed in Medina, or after the Prophet's migration. The former is known as Meccan and the latter as Medinan. The Meccan period of revelation is of 13 years and that of Medinan is 10 years. The total period of revelation is 22 years and 5 months, starting from 610 A.D. and ending in 632 A.D. The scholars have also grouped the suras into four kinds:-
a) at-tiwal (long ones) : 02-10
b) al-ma'un (app. 100 verses) : 10-35
c) al-muthana (app. Less than 100 verses) : 36-49
d) al-mufassal (last section of the Koran beginning with sura Qaf) : 50-114
Encyclopaedia of Ismailism by Mumtaz Ali Tajddingeneral SURA BARA'ATEncyclopedia TopicThe Koranic Sura Bara'at (or Sura Tauba) was revealed towards the end of the year 9 A.H., Abu Bakr was consigned its first forty verses to be read before the people in Mecca. After a few moments, the Prophet provided Ali bin Abu Talib a speedy camel, called Ghuzha and instructed to go ahead and overtake Abu Bakr and take away those verses from him and proceed to Mecca. When asked regarding this, the Prophet is reported to have said that Jibrail came to him and said, "Do not let it be performed by anyone other than yourself or someone from you on your behalf" (Masnad, 1:151, Tabari's Tafsir, 10:47, Dhur-e-Manthur, 6:200, etc.)
