INSTRUCTIONS: News events and News items

📅 Last updated: 28 Jan 2009
Introduction ========== News is structured into - News Events that contain a summary of each news event (ex: Opening Of the Delegation Building, Canada - 2008-12-06) - And News Items that are the individual articles that are grouped under the event. Once a news event is created, all subsequent articles, images and audio pertaining to it can be easily linked to the news event page. So, in summary, first, create a news event with a small blurb (like what went into the old timeline) Then create all other content that goes under the event. (ie: articles, interviews, press releases, images, video, audio, etc ) Creating a News Event that will have more than one article in it ================================================== - Go to "create content" - "news event" - Enter the title including the date "title - yyyy-mm-dd" - Make sure to enter the date again in the "From Date" field - Enter your paragraph in the "Summary" field - Fill out the categories section (in general subjects, lots of material this year will have "golden jubilee 2007". Feel free to leave some blank) - For the news, person_place, and album fields, link those only if the items you want to link already exist don't type in anything new. - Submit. The event will appear on the main page Creating a News Article/Press Release/Speech/Inerview under the News Event =============================================================== - Go to "create content" - "News Item" - Enter the title including the date "title - yyyy-mm-dd" - Make sure to enter the date again in the "From Date" field - Link the news event in the "News" section (start typing the date, the event will appear in the dropdown) - Fill out the categories section - Enter the Source, Author and Story - Submit. The News item will now appear in the event's page. Creating a News Event that will have just one article in it ============================================= - If you just have one article on a new subject, then it is a hassle to need to create the news event first - so, you don't have to! - Just create the news item as above and leave the news event link field blank. When you submit the news item, a corresponding news event will get automatically created and linked. - You can then create images and link them to the news event, and place one of those images in the teaser (as explained below). Note: A teaser is the part of the news event that you see on the main page (title+ a paragraph + an image) Images for the news event ==================== - If you have many images: Create the images using instructions here and link them to this event. Linked images will appear in the left menu of the news event. - To attach one image to the event: You may have noticed that events on the front page have one image thumbnail that shows up in the summary (teaser image). This is the "attached image". Once you have uploaded the images, you may re-edit your news event and choose one existing image in the "attached images" section. The news event will now have a teaser image. The reason why it is best to only attach EXISTING images to news events is because if you upload an image from within a news event, there is no way to place it in an album, and it goes into oblivion. You must then re-edit the image to place it in an album. - If you only have one image and you want to upload it from within the news event in the attached immages section, you may do that. But make sure it is properly named (YYYYMMDD - Title - ###.jpg). Then you may click on the image after you create the event, click edit to fill out any relevant info, and place it into an acidfree album ex: 2008.
