Maputo, Mozambique, 19 March 2022 – The Aga Khan Academy Maputo, a new academic centre of excellence, was inaugurated today by the President of the Republic of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi together with the President of the Portuguese Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in the presence of Prince Rahim Aga Khan, representing His Highness the Aga Khan.

Prince Rahim arrived in Maputo on Wednesday night for a three-day visit, during which he will meet senior state officials and leaders of the Jamat, and attend the inauguration ceremony of the Aga Khan Academy Maputo.

Prince Rahim’s visit began at the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare for a meeting with Minister Nyeleti Brooke Mondlane. The Minister congratulated Prince Rahim on the inauguration of the Aga Khan Academy Maputo, as she fondly recalled her childhood, when she and her siblings attended Aga Khan schools in neighbouring Tanzania.

Mozambican palaeontologists have discovered and studied dinosaurs for the first time in their country, as part of a cooperation project with the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, involving Portuguese researchers, they said on Thursday.

“For the first time, Mozambican master students conducted research, which resulted in the publication of their first scientific article,” the Portuguese palaeontologist Ricardo Araújo, of the University of Lisbon’s Higher Technical Institute, told Lusa.

The Aga Khan Development Network has invested about US$300 million (€267 million) in socio-economic projects in Mozambique since 2001, the agency’s representative in the country said on Wednesday.

The money has been spent on programmes in the agriculture and food security, health, financial inclusion, education and civil society and tourism sectors, Nazim Ahmad said in Maputo during a reception for notables on the occasion of the “Imamat Day of His Highness the Aga Khan”.

Political and economic stability in Mozambique for the last 10 years makes the country one of the most important reference points for investment in Africa, said in Maputo on Wednesday Princess Zahra Aga Khan, who arrived in Maputo for a two day official visit.She was speaking during a ceremony where the Aga Khan Foundation signed an agreement with the Mozambican government to build a school in the southern city of Matola. This school is to cater for both primary and secondary education, with the prospect of eventually building a university on the same premises.

The Aga Khan, the spiritual head of the Ismaili community, joined President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique on Monday in announcing the creation of Aga Khan Academy, Maputo, an academic centre of excellence which will be the second of some 20 being established by the Aga Khan Development Network across the Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia.
'To educate is a task that belongs to us all,' said President Chissano, calling 'the promotion of quality education for all Mozambicans, a prime condition in the struggle against poverty in our country'.
