2008, October 30: Prince Aga Khan pays visit to Kazakhstan - One of the World famous patrons of art, Prince Karim Aga Khan VI has paid a visit to Kazakhstan. He is one of the descendants of the Prophet Mohammed and he is also the Imam of the Muslim and Shiite community of the Ismaili. His Excellency was welcomed to the Ak Orda residence by Nursultan Nazarbayev. The Prince is also the founder and one of the sponsors of many charity projects carried out in many countries including the CIS and some Central Asian states.

The prince plans to meet with leaders of Kazakhstan, the ministry said in a Thursday. According to the statement, Aga Khan will attend a groundbreaking ceremony that marks start of construction of a branch of Central Asian University in Tekeli (in Almaty oblast, southeast Kazakhstan).

Today President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has received the distinguished public figure Prince Karim Aga Khan in Astana. The two discussed issues of regional development, particularly, activities of Central Asia University that researches problems of mountainous regions. Campuses of the university are situated in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The education is paid, however, the special commission considers financial conditions of each student, and grants privileges if one deserves.

The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) today became the first International non-governmental organization to join a major effort by five Central Asian Republics, the Russian Federation and the United Nations International Drug Control Program (UNDCP) to combat a growing regional drug problem. By joining a 1996 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the UNDCP and the governments of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, the AKDN agreed to cooperate with those countries to address common problems of production, trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs.
