MUMBAI: The Aga Khan IV, Imam or spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and founder-chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), has called upon his community members to serve the nation and understand the importance of early childhood education.

The Aga Khan was in the city on Thursday as part of a 10-day visit to India to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of his Imamat.

The leader also told his followers that India is a country of opportunities and it is the duty of every citizen to live with optimism, avail the opportunities and lead an ethical life here.

Princess Zahra Aga Khan gave the keynote of the Opening Ceremony of the 36th Asian Racing Conference in Mumbai.

In the late 19th century my great-great-great grandfather was racing horses all over undivided India. He had brought his stock from Persia, where the family had been breeding horses for many generations.

Included in those horses in the late 19th century, were Shere Ali, who won the Arab Derby in 1869, Khusroo who won the Winner’s Handicap in 1870, and Maharaj, who won loads of stuff including the Governor’s Cup and the Derby in 1872.

Princess Zahra Aga Khan will give the opening address at the Opening Ceremony of the 36th Asian Racing Conference at the National Sports Club of India in Mumbai on Monday, Jan. 26, 2016.

The address has special significance given that the history of her family's involvement in racing and breeding began in India in the 1800's with Aga Khan I.

The green silks with red epaulets of His Highness the Aga Khan IV are famous in top-class racing in Europe and throughout the world.

The spiritual leader of Shiite Ismaili Muslims is the 49th heriditary imam

MUMBAI: The top spiritual leader of the Shiite Ismaili Muslims is expected to reach Mumbai on May 14 as part of an eight-day official visit to the country.

The 49th hereditary imam, prince Karim al-Husseni, who is a descendant of the Prophet Aga Khan, touched base in Delhi on Monday, where he met prime minister Manmohan Singh, president Pratibha Patil and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. He is in the country to take part in the golden jubilee celebrations of the Aga Khan, which began in July last year.

India bags three Aga Khan awards for architecture-1998-11-02

India has bagged three of the seven Aga Khan Awards for Architecture for 1998.

The winning projects are civil engineer-town planner Himanshu Parikh's slum networking project at Indore, architect Charles Correa's Vidhan Bhavan at Bhopal and Norwegian architects Per Christian Brynildsen and Jan Olav Jensen's lepers' hospital in Chopda taluka in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district.

Tilonia's architects are building up local skills-2001-11-10

The `Barefoot Architects' of Tilonia, led by Bunker Roy, have won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture for 2001.

This prestigious international award is given every three years. According to the Aga Khan Foundation, the Barefoot Architects' programme of works in Rajasthan's rural community of Tilonia has been given this award ``for its integration of social, ecological, cultural and educational elements in such a way as to aid rural development while promoting the architectural traditions of the region''.
