Celui qui avait l'honneur de franchir les portes de son somptueux château de Bellerive ou, dans le cas particulier, de son hôtel de la Vieille-Ville, était reçu par un serviteur égyptien en livrée. Il se voyait servir une tasse de café turc dans la plus fine porcelaine.

His Highness the Aga Khan today announced the expansion of a new generation of financial products and services to help some of the world's most vulnerable populations. The Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance (AKAM), a new institution created specifically for this purpose, will deliver innovative services including micro-insurance, small housing loans, savings, education and health accounts, and support for small entrepreneurs seeking to develop businesses related to restored cultural assets. The Agency will be part of the Aga Khan Development Network.

Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, a former UN High Commissioner for Refugees and uncle of Prince Karim Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, died in the United States on Monday. He was 70.
The prince died in a Boston hospital after a long illness, an official of one of his foundations told AFP. After a career in the United Nations that spanned nearly 40 years, the prince devoted himself to defence and environmental issues.

Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, a wealthy philanthropist who held a string of top United Nations humanitarian posts and was the uncle of the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims, has died, associates said Tuesday. He was 70.
Sadruddin died Monday in Massachusetts General hospital in Boston, said Nasir Sunderji, an official of the Geneva-based Bellerive Foundation, an environmental organization founded by Sadruddin. There were no immediate details on the cause of death.

The Aga Khan, billionaire spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili sect of Islam, said he would expand microcredit schemes by offering other financial services such as insurance for poor people in developing countries.
A new non-profit microfinance agency would deliver micro-insurance, small housing loans, savings, education or health accounts, and study new ways of providing a range of financial services to poor communities, he announced.

'Loans to health and education can break down the barriers to access to those services for the poor,' the Aga Khan told journalists.

The world's biggest humanitarian prize has been awarded to BRAC, the largest non-profit organization in the developing world. The 2008 Hilton Humanitarian Prize of $1.5 million honors BRAC, a Bangladeshi-based NGO, for its achievements in helping to eradicate poverty in nine Asian and African countries. Lisa Schlein reports for VOA from Geneva where the award was announced.
