On Thursday, April 17, 2008 Atlanta will welcome His Highness Prince Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of 15 million Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. The Aga Khan, at the invitation of Governor Purdue, will visit Atlanta as a part of four city visit he is undertaking to celebrate his Golden Jubilee, the 50th year as the Imam. He will be in Atlanta for three days following his visits to San Antonio, Los Angeles and Chicago. His visit will witness the gathering of over 25,000 of his followers from over 30 countries.

Leader of the Aga Khan Community in the world, Prince Karim Aga Khan is expected to arrive in Bangladesh on 19 May on a 3-day visit. Bangladesh will accord VVIP [Highest Official Status] to him during his visit. A gazette notification was already issued in Dhaka on May 12 in this regard.

April 12 - His Highness the Aga Khan and Princess Zahra began their day with a visit to the State Capitol and a meeting with Governor Rick Perry of Texas. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the University of Texas and the Aga Khan University. In the evening, the Governor and First Lady of Texas hosted a gala in honour of His Highness's Golden Jubilee, during which H.H. the Aga Khan announced the establishment of a new Ismaili Centre to be located in Houston.[More]

April 2 - Aga Khan's cultural centre crown jewel for Don Mills...it will be a full-fledged international destination, a place for all. His Highness was concerned about what kind of image the centre will send to the population at large. 23 March 2008 DUBAI - The Ismaili Centre in Dubai will be opened on March 26 by The Aga Khan. As the fourth Ismaili Centre in the world and the first in the Middle East, the opening of this centre is historic for the community. Situated on Oud Metha Road, the centre introduces a timeless statement of Islamic architecture to the contemporary landscape of the Middle East.

Mowlana Hazar Imam was presented with the Nishan in the Order of Pakistan, the country's highest civil award, by President Mohammad Zia Ul-Haq at a ceremony attended by government ministers, diplomats and civic leaders in Islamabad on March 23, 1983.
The Award, according to the official citation, was made in recognition of Hazar Imam's contribution to Pakistan's social and economic development, and to the well-being of the world of Islam.

Shelters built from earth-filled plastic sacks joined together with barbed wire and plaster would hardly be the obvious choice to win an Islamic architecture prize. But for the judges of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture - as rooky architects at the American University of Sharjah learned this week - there is a lot more to Muslim monuments than minarets.Last year's winners of the triennial award included the Petronas Towers in Malaysia, a primary school in Burkina Faso and the earthquake-proof sandbag shelters of US-based Nader Khalili.

The Aga Khan, Imam of the Ismaili Muslims, today joined President Mkapa of Tanzania in laying the foundation stone for the construction of a new academy in Dar es Salaam.The Academy will be a residential school offering pre-primary to higher secondary education benchmarked against world-class standards. A scholarship programme will support entry by top-ranked students of limited means.

After years of being turned away at the schoolhouse gates, girls marched proudly at the head of the class Saturday at a ceremony here marking the start of school and the resumption of education for girls as well as boys in this country freeing itself from the Taliban's grim grip.
'A great day for Afghanistan,' declared interim Prime Minister Hamid Karzai after being showered with golden confetti by a choir of gaily dressed female pupils. 'Probably today was the happiest day for me personally here--to see our children go to school and to see them happy.'
